ABS unit will not turn off
« on: April 30, 2010, 10:00:33 pm »
So i was just driving along and my abs warning light goes on, gave the brakes a few testing activations and they worked so that's a bonus, but upon turning the car off, the abs unit/pump thing stays on. Full bore. Nothing short of yanking the battery fixes this (as I don't know what fuse to pull as it's in japanese).

  • Is it f***ed?
  • Is there anything I can try to remedy this
  • which fuse do I pull? :D

97 jdm wrx wagon.

Hopefully somebody's awake...:P

Give the ABS pump a tap. Sounds like a sticking relay. It will drain your battery pretty quick if you leave it.

Yeah it's sitting with the battery unplugged atm so as to not do what everyone else with this problem on the internet did haha.

By 'tap' do you mean grab a wrench and tap the side/top of the pump with it? Just checking before I go whacking things :P

Yup, just need to shock the relay into releasing. Start with light taps and work up to bigger. Maybe use a piece of wood so you don't damage the pump.

It kind of works, turned it mainly off but was still making a little bit of noise, if I hit it again it goes off for about 2 seconds and then starts up again (albeit to a much lesser extent than before)...should I hit it harder?  ;D

You most definitely should! I have mental images you you whacking your pump with a plank of 2x4 XD

you use it to create a vacuum... rather than sucking a black hose off.

It sounds knackered then. I would look at getting a replacement.

First thing I checked, fluid level is normal

Just the relay or the entire pump?

Found this article on page 20

http://ken-gilbert.com/wrx/mans/99-01%20impreza%20service%20manuals/Mechanism%20and%20Function.pdf

Huh?? Evaporative control?? Methinks you post the wrong link....
Should I just be looking at getting a new relay to start with or just get a whole abs unit?

There was a diagram and 'how it works' but no actual useful troubleshooting information :P. Thanks anyway though

Try pulling the relay out and see if it turns off.
