  1. This might help some of you guys. Sorry to bring this thread up again. But I thought it would be good to clarify some things as I've got a few insights from recent experience and opinions. My Legacy 2005 has a 'fish-bowl' factory tinted glass all around with 70% VLT (measured using the VLT device both at VTNZ and The Tinting Guys). I was about to get it tinted with 35% VLT film. I had a hunch that it might be illegal and got The Tinting Guys AND VTNZ to measure the VLT. It turned out to be an overall value of 26% VLT (close enough with the proven calculation using 0.7(existing)*0.35(additional film) = 24.5%. This is considered ILLEGAL and WILL NOT PASS WOF. Luckily, the tint guys also supplied 45% VLT and 50% VLT films. The 45% VLT were still too dark, approx overall 31% VLT (measured and calculated). Based on calculations, the perfect tints on top of the existing 70% VLT glass is the 50% VLT tint (0.7*0.5=35%). I have yet to have these installed. Be aware that films don't get made to the exact VLT value that it's said to have. This was the case when I went to the tinting place. The 45% VLT tint film was measured as roughly 43% VLT. So keep that in mind and get them to double check the VLT of that specific batch of film they will install on your windows. I was told by the tinting guys that VTNZ are stricter since last year (2017) when it comes to the VLT. They want it to be at least 35% VLT and nothing less (consumer cars of course. Goods vans etc can go as dark as they want). Even 34%, you might fail the WOF. JDM Cars with factory tinted glass (the dark ones on the rear windows) are perfectly LEGAL as they are factory windows (said by the guy from VTNZ directly). Hope that helps

  3. Thanks for that helpful advise We have a "warrant of fitness" system where cars get checked twice a year for legality & safety, hence getting "hung up on it" otherwise it's money and time wasted putting on illegal parts

  4. @JGM I'd be really keen on getting my hands on your D2's provided they're still in reasonable condition. Could you flick me a message to organise that? I'm in Wellington but if you're able to ship them I'll pay shipping, that'd be awesome. Just had the wag tinted over the weekend and it's looking good so I'm really keen on getting the build moving - well.. acquiring some parts at least! I imagine if I'm not going low low then I should only need Legacy bumpstops to maintain a functional ride. Thanks guys for the advice on fitment and guard work etc. Sounds like it won't be too much of a struggle to get 8.75's under there. My E30 is the real drain on the bank account so the aim is to keep things simple with the Outback!

Legal is legal just deal with it Factory privacy glass on most models is darker than nz legal limit for aftermarket tint There are literally dozens of factory tint codes in varying colours and shades, (green / gre / blue / bronze) , all let different amounts of light through. Unless you own a light meter good luck working out exactly what you I have, sometimes you'll get half a dozen options in the same model vehicle depending on interior trim, options ticked etc. Plan A guesstimate what you have, DIY the tints and hope it's still legal, plan B go to a tinting place, get some which are guaranteed and if it does fail, they replace with legal. You take your risks either way

  9. Well my diy tint job went well but, I went in for my first wof since the tints went on (brought online with the assurance that I was wrong about the maths and that it would all work out to be legal) and they measure at 24%! It failed of course and now I guess I have to rip the damn things off!

  10. i broke the key off in the boot lock of my gen1 leggy once.... went 'oh sh-t' for a bit, then realised it was a genuine original key. took key to locksmith, they used the code on the key to make a new one. sold car not long after, with key still stuck in boot. about $15 for a new key.

  12. Take the lock out of the car and bang it really hard on a piece of wood to shake the key out far enough to grab with the tweezers? Might have to jamb the tab open while you do it, perhaps a two handed operation on the edge of the kitchen table with one hand holding a pin to hold he tab open. Failing that take it apart or have it taken apart.

  13. easiest way is to remove lock and dismantle (unless u can push it out) and then remove broken key or wot he said ^^^

  14. How much of the key broke off? Can you see the end of the key when you push the dust flap aside? We use dental picks for extracting broken keys, you have any lying around? ;D Dont push the key further into the lock, it can only come out one way. If worse comes to worse pull the lock out and send it up to me.

  15. reprogramming BG/BD OEM key fob. Fit new battery to key fob remove R/H side kick panel and locate the two plugs that are unplugged ( normally white / clear in colour ) turn ign to on position, manually close door switch by hand, join the connectors together and press key button Doors will lock then unlock to recognise frequency Disconnect wires and remove key from Ign
