  1. Howdy folks!

I posted recently about my frustration with headlight bulbs frequently blowing because they are hardwired to run as daylight running lights, shortening their life to about 5-6 months.

This normally wouldn't be a big deal, except accessing headlights on a 5th generation Legacy is via wheelwells and requires skills of a ventriloquist!

Tried researching disabling the headlight relay so they can be turn off, but no luck!

Plan B is to upgrade standard headlight bulbs with LED in hopes this extends time between replacement.

Can anyone recommend a H11 LED to suit 5th generation Legacy?  I've been recommended GTR brand from an overseas forum and doubt they are available here / not sure of compatibility with NZ compliance

  2. Howdy team Clubsub,

Last weekend our BP5 Legacy developed a dead flat battery, no big deal it was less than a year old and under warranty so was given brand new replacement from auto store Wednesday, started car and ran for less than minute and confirmed all good.  Had not used car since, then today went to start and AGAIN dead flat!

When I mean dead flat: the starter motor doesn't even click on turning the key, no lights on dash etc, our jumpstarter pack does nothing and C-Tek battery charger won't charge or even register as connected to a battery - it times out and switches off!

Now the odds of having two faulty batteries are slim, even more so with one less than a week old, so something in the car is draining the battery when the car is sitting idle.  Nothing obvious, no doors ajar, no aftermarket electrics anywhere in car

Not a typical lockdown flat battery either: car was driven roughly every 4 days to deliver/collect supplies for a distance of about 10kms and up to 80kph for some of it, would have thought that's enough to keep battery operational.

Auto store said I can take it in for them to charge up Monday.  Once battery is running, do you think I should take car to a mechanic or auto sparky?  I'm thinking its more likely an electrical gremlin, so unlikely a part for mechanic to swap out.

Even better can anyone suggest what the problem may be?

Appreciate any advice and thanks in advance!

  3. Hi guys,

We’re looking at buying a 2011 BR9 Legacy with a faulty passenger side heater not blowing hot.

From talking with the mechanic & a google search it could be any of the following:
    • blocked heater core
    • electrical fault
    • mechanical fault

From my understanding the electrical fault is the most expensive fault, any ideas how to narrow it down without getting intrusive?

Online search results only pointed to same issue in Forresters and not Legacies

Mechanic also pointed out car was slow to come up to temperature, suggesting a thermostat needs replacing - any chance this is related to heater issue or just a coincidence?

    Appreciate any help

At winger? $1500ish? Even at an independent i'd reckon 4 figures.

For an aftermarket kit alone it would be about $500, with another $120 for the water pump. Then you've got a fair few hours of labour.

On a SOHC EJ motor the cambelt isn't 'too" hard, but you have to diasassemble a bit to get to it, so depending on how mechanical you are you could try yourself 😄

cheers firenza, yeah my GC8 WRX was about $1k thru winger sublab, think our BG legacy was about half that at an independant mech.

Think I'll leave it to the pros - a bit out of my league!

If winger has done it they should be able to tell you if you ask about a particular service, they just cant give you the full service history without the previous owners permission

cheers, I  got hold of the correct winger's that did the cambelt back in 2013, so I guess its due again.

Anyone able to give me a ballpark figuire for cambelt replacement?

  6. The seller says the cambelt has been done, however underbonnet sticker proving this is gone and can't tell from the brief service history (just shows each interval was serviced with Wingers / other Subaru dealer).

Is a way of knowing by giving the plate number to Wingers or Subaru NZ?  I know Toyota keep detailed service records, hope Subaru is the same!

it's not hard to get the dash our for a visual inspections, screws up under dash trim & a few around the housing etc, plug could have fallen out?

Cheers Jared, will give it a go.  Makes sense it is a loose connection more than all the bulbs failing at once.

    muchos gracias amigos!

If the trailer plug wiring was the culprit it would have blown the tail light fuse. So if the fuse is still ok, I wouldn’t carry on down that path.

Are you sure what you are experiencing isn’t just the normal dimming of the interior lights when you turn the headlights on like Joker mentioned.

If this was an electrical issue then would almost certainly be a blown fuse. If not it would be a loss of power/ground circuit to the cluster (ie broken wire, or something unplugged). If you can confirm power/ground at the back of the cluster for the illumination wires and it still doesn’t work then the cluster is faulty (unlikely).

That is the thought path I would follow anyway.

    Will check all fuses, thanks.

Definitely not normal dimming - car simply doesn't have this function.  The dash instrument lights are totally off, at night I had to drive with interior cabin light on to read speedo

hrmm, considering car's low value & age might just live with it as not worth taking to an auto sparky.

  9. Hi guys,

Have a BG Legacy and noticed the instrument cluster lights no longer work when headlights are switched on.

All backlighting for other instruments like aircon controls, cigarette lighter surround etc still work.  As these are on the same circuit I thought the fuse was likely OK, checked and confirmed fuse still good.

Youtube clips show there are close to a dozen incandescent bulbs behind the dash, pretty unlikely they all blew at once you reckon?  Perhaps a loose connection?  No work has been done on dash recently, so I'm stumped why this happened.

    Anyone experienced similar?

  10. Hi guys,

Recently learned how pollen & road grime etc can clog the drains coming from sunroof which leads to water dumping into the footwell and soaking the sponge underlay.

After ripping apart interior to dry everything out I ran weedeater line down the front sunroof drains, tested with water and am satisfied they are now clear.

Which made me think - are there rear drains too?  I tried looking but if they are there they are so undercover at the back they would be impossible to access.  Anyone know?

  11. ugh..

Swapped reservoir & pump assembly over today with no luck... guessing fault is in the wiper stalk as now both front AND rear squirters don't work.

Don't suppose there is a fuse somewhere I should be checking?  Did check both engine bay & interior fuse boxes but couldn't see anything obviously labelled / read Japanese
