Had 4 or 5 small shakes since then.

was round back on the deck (Upper Riccarton). Leaves on trees by the stream were all shaking, mini waves appeared on the stream..

pretty surreal.

Feel sorry for all those working the boxing day sales right? Seeing Riccarton mall is now evac'd obviously lowering sales in an already hurt economy.

There was a power cut due to the earthquake this morning at 2.08am.

Walked outside looked down bealy ave. Man it was dam dark. The traffic lights were working.

They are aftershocks as they are a continuation of the initial earthquake i.e. along the same fault. As the weeks have gone by, the end of the fault has stretched both directions (towards and away from town, plus I think there was 3 intersecting faults as part of the main quake which made it a bit messy) and the aftershocks are the stress releasing at the tip of the faultlines. So as the stress builds up to the point where it lets go at one point, it then shifts the stress along the fault to another point, which then builds up and releases.

There has been one earthquake centered in Lyttleton (which also had its own aftershocks) that was separate from the main earthquake. All the other shocks are just the end of the first event. Also all the aftershocks combined have still only added up to a small percentage of the energy released by the main quake.

+1 to the above, Haiti is still getting aftershocks over 5 on the richter scale, so you can keep getting them up to a year down the track....And even longer as we are still in the infancy of studying earthquakes, this one alone has caused a huge amount of interest as it wasn't one earthquake but a series that was triggered by the first which caused a cascade effect in seconds.

A good job to have at the moment is to be a glasser.

I drove past the old Munmissple Electricity Dept building ( Now Bob Browns Hi Fi ) today.

Alot of the windows were blown out. The whole street was covered in broken glass.
