Guest

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys and gals glad the site is up and running once more :)

My 1997 Subaru legacy Gtb engine started knocking the other week and now the car wont start... so now i am stuck on what to do...

As im a uni student and is currently unemployed :P

i have about $2000 in savings which i want to either put a new engine in or rebuilt the current one.

what do u think i should do? convert it to single or repair the current engine?

Is it a manual? Cause it's probably the big end bearing. You will need allot more than 2K to get it fixed.

you best option would be something like this

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Subaru/Engines/auction-203372743.htm

or

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Subaru/Engines/auction-203458367.htm

or even

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Subaru/Engines/auction-203458368.htm

Then you gotta add things in like 6 packs and pizza for the good guy's on CS to come and help you, an engine crane hire, cambelts/pumps/tensioners/gaskets etc. etc. if you buy a shot block or long block without a cambelt.

yeah its manual .. dam legacys! lol i got a guys who would fix the engine for $2000..

The sound it was making was hi pitched sounded like there was a stoned stuck in engine every time i would accelerate it would make a rattling noise and it would not boost or accelerate, not that i was thrashing the car just drove normal, while it happened.

2nd hand engine is a gamble - you may get a dud or it may live longer than you!

BUT it is simplest and quickest option

as the guy says in the add (I think he got it wrong) I bet it is out of a BH and is a 98-00 engine not as described

AFAIK just some simple wiring/sensor issues

there are a few TK Wagons on this board

OR sell for scrap and buy http://www.clubsub.org.nz/forum/index.php?topic=265.msg1377#msg1377

yeah, the plate thing whatever it's called. So that would be an EJ20H, If palwow got it, he'd be using an EJ20R ECU, injectors, AFM etc, on EJ20H heads and block. Not a good combo. It would work i imagine, but he'd have less power.

I still think buying a built longblock is the best option. Like a 20K or 20R

We also have this:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Subaru/Engines/auction-202833195.htm

Built short block by PBMS. But i imagine atleast another $1500 getting the heads dealt to, and things like cambelts and water pumps etc though.

And the 20K is from the V3/4 STi. The EJ20R could be called the twin turbo version of the K, they have ALLOT in common. The EJ20R only came in manual GTB's and RSB's from 96-98. btw, i think the 20K is also the WRX and forrest engine too.

Doesn't, "The sound it was making was hi pitched sounded like there was a stoned stuck in engine every time i would accelerate it would make a rattling noise and it would not boost or accelerate, not that i was thrashing the car just drove normal, while it happened." sound like a turbo dying a sudden death?

Bearings don't make a high pitched sound.

I've never heard anyone describe big-end or main bearing noise as "rattling".

Have you had it diagnosed or are you throwing it out untested?

If you are throwing it... Can I have it?

Man you should have heard my big ends go. It was one HELL of a rattle i can tell you that. But yeah, a second opinion should definitely be had.

Also that trademe link you just posted Palwow is also for an EJ20H (cause he said it's from a 93-96). Like i said earlier, can and probably will work, but the heads are different to your GTB heads, the won't make as much power. The difference will hardly be noticable though..

lol my cars worth $6000 if u want it you can have it for $4000 and why would a member on c.s tell me to buy a corolla? :-\

It's the best advice I can give someone who is low on money, needs a car, and has a blown motor.

Rebuilding can end up being very expensive and time consuming... buying a trademe motor is

just plain risky... oh, and corolas are very reliable and cheap to run.

my rs legacy crapped itself a while ago too. cost me $700 for a 118000km engine from a 95gt (yes i know this is the inferior EJ20-H, but thats what it as before) and it cost me $400 for labour to get old engine pulled and new one put in so $1100 all up. plus i made $150 selling a turbo off it plus about $50 selling the block for scrap and selling an uppipe so really only cost me $900 plus ive got some spares now. I was just wondering, is there any difference with the auto and manual EJ20H because ive heard that in the auto the turbos kick in at lowr rpm than in the manual. anyone know if this is correct?

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
