Any helpful early-90's Subaru owners in Dunedin?

Hi guys, I have a 1993 Impreza HX (EJ18).

Short story:

This may be kind of a weird request but does anyone in Dunedin have a Subaru with a 1.8, 2.0 or 2.2 L engine that is working perfectly? I need to try swapping the AFM sensor over to my Suby to see if it fixes an issue I\'m having. It\'s a 5 minute job and would be a box of beer (or $20) in it for someone :) Otherwise I\'m looking at paying a lot of money at a wreckers, with the chance it will not fix my car.

The sensor I need to try is pictured below.

The part number is 22680 AA170 .. AFH70-01

Long story:

It\'s having real issues under acceleration when the power drops off noticeably at ~2000 RPM and 3000 RPM. This gives a sort of surging feeling.

Sometimes if I really thrash it it sort of breaks through whatever it is holding it back as it reaches 4000 RPM and pulls relatively cleanly and strongly. Other times it struggles all the way through to red line.

It feels worse when it\'s cold, but it\'s still pretty bad when it\'s warmed up.

No check engine light or anything

It\'s had:

New oil and filter

New fuel filter

Air filter looks new

New spark plugs

Cleaned AFM filaments

Checked resistance of plug leads

Ran a dose of injector cleaner through a full tank

Used that Subaru Top Engine Cleaner spray

Still no change..

So I took it to a mechanic,

He scanned it for fault codes - no codes were returned

Checked ignition and fuel system

Checked spark strength

Cleaned throttle body

Cleaned and checked AFM

He said the TPS, O2 and crank angle sensors are fine.

And $150 later, still no change! He is also out of ideas!

So I have tried disconnecting the primary O2 sensor. The car goes into limp mode and drives much nicer. If I understand limp mode correctly, the car runs using pre-determined values for the sensors. If this actually fixes the issue somewhat, then I\'m guessing it\'s proof there is a sensor that needs replacing, that is giving bad signals under normal operating conditions. Hence my need for a good working AFM to try out :)

Cheers,

Bernard

You can self test it a bit as well - if you have a multimeter you can watch the voltage it puts out, it "should" rise relatively smoothly and not fluctuate around terribly much under steady load or do anything too oddball while accelerating

Worth a shot if you have no luck finding a donor

Does really sound like an afm fault too, had a mates bc5 at work that did the same and it was afm, mine was doing it and it was afm (and plugs were fouled too though)

Common issue on subaru\'s

Wow great response. Thanks all. Roo I\'ll take you up on that if I haven\'t found one to try by that stage.

If this doesn\'t work I\'m confident it\'ll be the O2 sensor from what I\'ve read here and on NASIOC. In the meantime it\'ll just keep running like dog sh*t so I might go back to limp mode.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
