Will a downpipe and tune increase my premiums?

Hi there everyone,

I have a 4th gen JDM legacy GT, and i'm considering getting the Subtech Downpipe and getting an open source tune.

For people who have done these, how did it affect your insurance premiums/did your insurance not accept it? I'm 22 and was surprised that State insurance even insured me for a turbo Subaru in the first place...

a downpipe is an exhaust mod. they might have an issue around that.

technically a retune requires a cert, but prove its been retuned :-P

Yeah, i was assuming there would be extra cost or something with it, just wanted to see what other people's experiences have been. I'll still at least enquire, they can't increase premiums just on me asking...

Never affected mine. but im old now. Not like i had an austin 7 in my youth but old enough that insurance companies dont really bother me with that

Man, can't wait until the day i don't have to think about it too hard either... I'll definately be seeing what they say at least.

Mine didn't change with a downpipe and a set of mufflers, just as long as you're honest with them, you don't want to give them any reason to void your claim down the track when you actually need them for something.

You can have up to 3 modifications to your vehicle with state before they'll think about voiding your policy.

My fiance is a supervisor at state claims, so if you have any questions i'll try ask them tonight for ya.

Not like it affects a wof, or is even checked for

A mechanical warranty sure it would have an impact, but it's not something which is really a) noticable or b) changing the value or theft risk of it

A set of big wheels or an easily pinchable stereo is another story tho

My completely uneducated opinion is you'd have to have the worlds most ridiculously thorough and pedantic assessor to try and void a payout

More power = more chance of crashing, in their eyes atleast.

I'm 24 now but when i got the 3rd gen turbo i'd just turned 22 so as long as you haven't had any crashes i don't think they care at all.

Thats why for now i'm going to try get a cryotune e-tune and leave it at that till i get bored again. I'm with state too so i'll be keen to see what they say to you.

Also the caryard gave me an extended mechanical warranty so don't wanna go voiding that too soon so i'll most likely just stick with the tune until that runs out. After that though the subtech one will be the top of the list

Also if it was first registered in nz after may 2010 legally it can't have the cat removed without another one put in its place

Yeah that's what I would expect as well, but they do it all the time, I've heard of some ridiculous reasons for policy's being voided, to me it's disgusting what they can get away with, but they will do anything they can to avoid paying out.
