How to Holset your Subaru

Guest

Recommended Posts

This thread is to give a rough idea of a generic setup to suit a Holset install on a Subaru.

Notes:

Im running a set of bl/bp twinscroll headers/up pipe endorsed by murch. If you run the calcs on the header volumes theyre a better fit than the V8 STI ones. Smaller the better with Holsets.

You will need a twin scroll sump if you do not have one fitted.

An HX35 or the Murch HRC35/2 is a good fit for EJ20/25 to around 350wkw but bear in mind you need supporting mods and headwork/cams will make a massive difference to the overall result. The HX40 or HRC40RS is 350-450wkw at a guess. Twinscroll is a necessity on any Holset imo.

For an EJ20 I would recommend a minimum of a 40mm gate and anything above a 2l at minimum a 44mm.

Whats required:

Upipe/downpipe

Genuine header gaskets x3

Twin scroll headers/up pipe - legacy bl/bp or v8- sti

This is in some sort of order but follow your nose and use a little common sense.

So I figured out where the monstrosity of a turbo needed to sit - this is a 2 man job - then tacked the mount/s onto the flange so it sat in the correct place.

20160227_164105_zpsgzg4cb9n.jpg

Next I cut the up pipe at the lower cut in this pic and used some of the up pipe along with some of the new to build one then the other secondaries. The 38mm OD tube squeezes up well in a vice to slip inside the T3 flange.

Next step is to bolt up the exhaust housing and start playing with the downpipe. I had the V band on the rear of the housing machined to match the generic off the shelf 2.5" V bands cost $20 and had a step machined into it.

20160305_132755_zpsylxuaqex.jpg

Next you need to fab a compressor outlet

20160303_224355_zpsdmuehemk.jpg

Wastegate is the C*** part so Ill just post up pics and you can figure it out. Not prepared to debate single vs twin gate etc this is how I did it and it works.

I started by positioning gate and making the collector.

20160409_093037_zpsc2senu4h.jpg

Then I placed it on the scroll and marked up the other side.

20160521_211453_zpsbjauhzv1.jpg

20160521_211545_zpsrx1hsnnj.jpg

Then you need to sort the plumb back. The further south the better and try for the lowest angle you can. You need a flexi in here.

20161004_114242_zpskptyvaku.jpg

20161004_114249_zpswp0rjiep.jpg

Next you need to sort the oil return. The evo return is good as its convuluted which helps the oil return to is native state and has a good ID. You will need to slot the mount holes slightly and use washers to hold it in place. Simply trim the end off it and slip a piece of silicon over for the return. You need clamps on it.

20160606_145937_zpslx3it5dt.jpg

For the oil feed line I used the bung at the back of the oil gallery and swapped it for an oil pressure bung from the front of another block as per pic. Holsets like a lot of oil so I figured a gallery was the best place to draw from.

Great write up and pics. I was wondering how much do these holset turbos normally go for?

Cheers. The HRC35/2 I used has a rrp of 1650 off the top of my head. A common HX35 with 7 blade comp and 16cm housing off a dodge roughly 7-900 landed from the states secondhand. Then a rebuild and smaller housing puts you up to similar money as the local sourced murch holsets. If you buy off murch he will tell you what you need to do to make the most of it too which is an added bonus.

Oh I see. Just investigating turbo options for the future when I buy another Subaru. Thanks for your help.

Informative guide, I like the Turbosmart choice - Australasian company :) Out of curiosity, what boost are you running?

Sold the car to another member @Furze

On the 2l I ran 20psi max at one point and put around 1500km on it at 16-18ish. Pretty similar stats but far less km on the previous 2.5l which drove a lot nicer with it.

Think it was tuned for 26psi on high boost at dtech.

That car is running 23psi currently. Thing are probably going to change with the revision of the new motor coming up so.

Hi @evowrx, can't seem to pm you.

I have a 2004 Legacy GT BP5

I have spoken to Steve Murch as well, and he recommended the same turbo. I am building a 2.1 closed deck stroker. Looking at 300+kw. Can you tell me when you hit full boost on your ej20?

@Furze @Dairusire

He’s not really round much anymore. The family life took hold of him.

He sold his car to Furze, so should be able to get any needed info from him or Dairusire.

Edit: Actually it’s running a 257 now so they’ll only have info with that setup

Hope you plan on putting up a build thread for it. It’s my long term goal too. Just with a 257 instead for a more juicy bottom end

Ahh yea it was the 257 not the 207 he pulled because he thought he had rod knock but was just incorrectly set piston rings or something like that

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
