Sub drone - not low enough

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a 04 legacy wagon with the non mcintosh stereo. Kenwood I think.

So far I've put a anycarlink in it, line level convertor to a cheap kenwood amp under the seat and I've fibreglassed a sub box in the back left of the boot/hatch.

Sub is a fusion 10"

I know the equipment is very average in the past I've at focal, dd, rainbow gear but this is obv a budget setup.

Now the sub is real droney, and I'd like it to hit bass notes lower.

It sounded better in my previous car in a different enclosure. Should I calculate a port to use for this or do I need a bigger sub enclose, I'm unsure how big it is and i would need to pour water into it to measure.

Any tips to get lower bass notes and not so peaky?

Cheers

How is the sub wired in? If its wired in like any other speaker it will be trying to play every frequency not the just low ones so it'll sound really muddy and unclear.

Ideally you can put a low pass filter over it as the a sub is only there to play 100Hz - 150Hz and under and even that is probably too much range to get a super crisp sound.

You'll need to know the box volume. Even just approximately. If it's really small then the port will need to be either impractically long or too small in order to achieve a meaningfully low tuning frequency.

Also it's worth checking that the amp doesn't have a subsonic filter.....

The specs for the sub recommend a .5cu (15L) sealed enclosure and a 1.5cu for a ported.

I would say my enclosure would be a fraction bigger then the sealed specs. But i will fill it water water and measure.

Its hard to make the enclose bigger without it taking a heap of space in the boot.

Nice work with the enclosure.

Only two cents I have to add is that with a rear facing sub you get reflected bass, versus a forward facing sub you get it directly. It could be causing interference with the mid range speakers giving you issues?

Que pasa?

Reflected bass?

I mean due to path length differences you're always going to have a little bit of phase difference between sub and midbass but considering it's sound, travelling at the speed of itself, we're talking milliseconds in a car cabin.

Pics don't load for me at work, but I will add that if it's just thin fibreglass it will vibrate like ****, on a custom box my friend had in his Celica it needs a solid 5mm or so of glass plus Dynamat to stop the box vibrating like crazy.

I find i have the same issue with the sub not hitting low frequencies. I have put it down to the stock keenwood head unit filtering out the bass so it won't damage the factory speakers. The same sub/amp combo sounds great in the mrs car with a basic pioneer head unit so its nothing to do with enclosure size etc. I have ordered a audio control lc21 line out filter as i have read they can sort out the rubbish EQ tune from the factory headunit.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
