Clutch question

Hi, i'm a newbie to Subaru... planning to buy a WRX Turbo Version 8 within 2 weeks.

Just wondering what clutch it takes? is it 225mm or 230mm?

Trying to decide between these two:

neither of em.

i STRONGLY recommend buying a genuine clutch through wingers (or your nearest subaru stealership)

failing that, ring drews automotive directly, mention clubsub. they have supported a LOT of club members recently and by all accounts they are a bloody nice clutch setup.

bear in mind that with a heavy duty clutch, if you tend to side step it quite violently, you can do damage to your thruust bearings. have seen a set of thrust bearings recently from a car that had a heavy duty clutch and a pretty violent life, it was VERY close to turning itself inside out.

Im pretty sure they are 230mm.

If you are choosing between them it depends what you want it for, the Heavy Ceramic clutch kit has a higher clamp pressure which is useful if you are putting through more power but it would probably be a bit harder to drive, a bit more bitey, I think that how it works. If your just using it as daily and not adding huge power, you might as well get the other one. Im not too familiar with clutches so someone else will have to confirm (or probably deny) what im saying...

Edit: Just like kwi_fozze says, its probably better to get a genuine clutch from subaru.

last time i bought a clutch through em, i paid $730 for a full kit including release bearing for a 6 speed sti clutch.

 

5 speeds are normally significantly cheaper. i dont think drews does genuine clutches, but their clutches are fantastic

Thanks Dazz01. Clutch job labour doesn't come cheap so I'm trying to weigh out whats the best clutch to put in there.

i think you have some wires crossed. the "drews automotive clutches", the ones they make, are bloody good.

 

as are the genuine subaru clutches that you can pick up from a subaru dealership.

 

its a much of a muchness, but the drews clutches are good value for money. give em a ring, get some prices. do the same at your local dealership

Id personally buy genuine or exedy. The drews puk one i had was shite compared to exedy puk ones ive had previous.

I've got a Drew's auto clutch and it's good. However

As for the heavy clutch doing damage to thrust bearings, yes it does happen. However it's also got lots to do with if your motor was built properly in the first place, and how you treat your car.

Also depends on how careful the person was that installed the new clutch and bearing..

Easy to get too violent with things when the box doesn't go in first time..

Clutch will still work but the bearing can be damaged and fail prematurely..

Suggest you buy either genuine or exedy and get installed by a garage that backs up their work..

For either genuine or exedy clutch, how much should I put aside just for the parts?

I'm not planning on over powering my subie but won't be driving like a nana so standard clutch would do for me (goodbye heavy duty)

I had a new clutch fitted for $1100 all up..Usually half parts and half labour..

That's not bad. I'm located in Nelson and I've found a mechanic who used to work at Subaru so i'm going to ask him to do it. Just trying to figure out if I can source a good clutch for a better price. Probably use the current flywheel after skimming though
