Wheel spacers? bad idea?

Hey guys.

I haven't owned my 06 Forester Sti long, and am only looking to make entry level mods. Something I've really been wanting to do is increase my track width and bring my wheels further out (mostly for aesthetic reasons). I'm not ready to invest in a new wheel set yet but I have read a lot about spacers and they seem like a cheap and easy solution.

But.. I've also read a lot of warnings about spacer failure, added stress to suspension & wheel bearings and increased wear. I know how much science and engineering goes into the design of the factory set up.. am i ruining it by using spacers? Should I avoid them all together? I just know my car would look sooo much better with a wider stance. any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks fam.

I'd usually go straight to the VIRM website but doesn seem to mention anything there

https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof-and-cof/general/tyres,-wheels-and-hubs/tyres-and-wheels

tread must be under the guard & there are limits on tire vs rims sizes too (aka if you're going for stretch or wide wheels)

edit : yes it does specifically https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof-and-cof/general/tyres,-wheels-and-hubs/tyres-and-wheels#table1011

Table 10-1-1. Modifications that do not require LVV certification

Fitting of or modification to:

LVV certification is not required provided that:

Aftermarket wheel fitments1

  • the wheels:

– are of a known and reputable brand, and

– would be considered an appropriate fitment for the vehicle type by the wheel manufacturer, and

– are not modified, and

– do not have spacers or adaptors fitted.

  • the tyre tread:

– does not protrude beyond the unmodified original body panels (including unmodified factory-fitted mudguard extensions), or

protrudes beyond the unmodified original body panels, but is covered by aftermarket or modified mudguard extensions or modified body panels, and the track width has increased by no more than 25mm from OE.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that's over width of the whole car not per side. So 12.5 mm each side?

  • 1 year later...

Resurrecting an old thread.

Thinking of getting some 10mm hubcentric spacers for the 2011 STI. Just to get the factory wheels to sit a bit more flush.

I've always said to myself i'd never buy spacers from what i've heard etc. But forking out 3k for new wheels and tyres is something i wont be able to do for a long long time.

Would 10mm hubcentric spacers be safe? Any issues with wheel balance, running true etc? I have zero experience with spacers

10mm spacers must be the slip on type = big no no IMO, your wheel nuts will have 1cm less threads to grab onto and spacers add extra load to the wheel bearings. 2011 STI must be 5x114.3 with bigger/stronger bearings so it's not as big of an issue as it is for the 5x100 guys I guess.

On top of that they're illegal :D it's not even possible to get a cert for slip on spacers.

do you have a cert? Technically you need a cert for any type of spacer

Honestly? Try a 10mm & make sure there is enough thread, I think that's the Max you can go without the bolt on type like above, I've run 3mm Slip on Spacers before & didn't die (my personal experience & you risk voiding Insurance & whatnot in the event of an accident weather they are at fault or not)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
