Theft prevention tactics

Hey not sure if the best section but hey, looking for tips on general theft prevention stuff. Have 5 star car alarm but forever paranoid as it's my daily. Currently considering getting something like a steering wheel lock as further deterrent, something bright stop them even wanting to try get in from the outside.

edit : public forum, nothing specific about where you putting switches or anything guys! just roughly deterrent type stuff one could do to make lives of theif scumbags harder

Steering wheel locks are useless, I used one on a previous car - people can just saw the steering wheel and remove it. Can't speak much for prevention tactics, I just have an alarm and GPS tracker. If someone reeeeeealy wants your car they'll probably just tow it.

A friend of mine (who owns possibly the fastest RS in nz)

Chopped a wire here and there a kapow - full proof

If someone breaks in and figures out how to bypass the alarm the car will start but will put out of gas seconds later :P

heh you guys are doing great at telling the world your 'secrets' eh :P

perhaps not the best idea to elaborate specifically aye?

crank angle sensor is the simplest, other methods are equally "PITA" for the operator especially come WOF time or in the chance someone else needs to drive your car

insurance and or GPS nothing is fool proof, sad to say, I'm not a defeatist but anything you do is ultimately overcome by either the most determined thief or the 2 second smash and grab opportunist

if the thread gets toooo silly it will get locked

chains around rims & diffs are great until you forget it or scratch something, as mentioned wheel clamps or locks are also temporary, take the whole steering wheel with you might work except they are $10 at PaP & any bad guy will scope it out & carry a spare with them etc...

If someone comes to (where I live) and cuts the chains / gets past the alarm / rewires the fuel pump relay to steal a 25year old car that is average at best then they obviously havnt seen my next door neighbors v7  lololol

original post edited however :P

The only guarantee you have when it comes to theives is theft insurance.

Gone are the days of the simpleton smashing a window and hot wiring the car for a speedy getaway. These guys literally do it for a living, if they want it they'll take it,  pure and simple. No amount of alarms, switches, disconnected circuits or anti thrift equipment will stop them.

A friends wrx got stolen from a train station in broad daylight, it was alarmed with immobilizers and a steering wheel lock, police closed the case a few short days in due to lack of evidence and leads. Cc tv at the station wasn't even useful enough to id  anyone or anything.

Insure it, you at least get a small some of money back, because you'll never see the car again.

all apple devices natively support find my phone so thats why i suggest iPhone. Any smart phone will work but 3rd party apps suck imo. i have no android experience but i believe they support Google tracking too so that would work.

A setup which i have seen work is an older iPhone 4s wired in somewhere to charge when ignition is on, ideally hidden but thats up to the individual. turn off mobile data for basically everything except find my phone and then pop a prepaid sim in it with a $19 data plan or something and add it to your carrier account. dont top it up just leave it with no credit. car goes missing throw $20 on the number and it will automatically renew the plan. then track it. I have seen this done and tested multiple times and it seems to work. Some people are paranoid and choose to keep it topped up on a monthly basis and check in on it now and then but thats a monthly cost.

Thing i like about this is even if they pull the battery from your car if you configure an iphone correctly it will sit in its super secret location running on battery for days.

nek minit they break in just to steal the iphone and gap the scene. i suspect for this to work you'd want to hide it in a place that's really hard to access.

question about immobilisers. i have a 5 star car alarm, is the immobilizer good enough to stop someone from being able to take the care other than by towing it? its got a loud ass alarm siren too but i guess that is easily shut up by cutting the cable to it. famous last words but i'm not that concerned about anyone towing it away, more concerned about the smash and grab opportunist types

also have 1 locknut on each wheel and intend on putting the locknut somewhere a bit more secure too

Decent sirens actually have there own stand alone battery in the unit so will keep screaming even if you cut the wires, however a decent thief could just send the correct signal to the siren manually so it never goes off in the first place.

I've seen a decent auto electrician rip out a car alarm in 15mins, and that included cleaning up and soldering all the wires back together cleanly. For someone who knows what they are doing it isn't that hard to get around unfortunately. It really depends on how well the original installer put it in.

If only there was a car version of this... :P

Unfortunately, most of the thefts I've heard off seem to be trailer jobs. Probably someone with flatbed tow truck or similar.
Even without engine running they can load it up.

Seems like GPS and insurance is the only real way to protect your pocket these days.

haha true that, would probably be best to hard wire an iphone carger to run on an accesory circuit, even run a wire and tuck it all behind the glove box or somethingso the phone just stays in there forever, always charging when the car is on

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
