Servicing my Legacy 3.0R

Recommended Posts

Hows it guys my 2006 Legacy 3.0R is just coming up to 50,000kms and will need a service Im just wondering what others suggest, basically Ian wondering is it worth getting a Subaru dealer to service it and pay around $300 for a service every 10k or just do it myself

I ask this because obviously if it has a service history from a dealer/workshop it has better resale value, but if I do it myself i will save the cost that they charge etc

Any suggestions of what others have done or suggest?

If you DIY it right, then the money you save over time beats the overall money made on resale value.
Standard items, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, in cabin filter. Fluid changes, box/diff oil, I'd check the plugs personally- but that may not be easy in a 3.0.
check your brake fluid, clutch fluid make sure it's okay. maybe run a can of upper engine cleaner through it too, breathe a bit of life.

Yeah well I just called them and they quoted me (Nelson Subaru) for a 50K service $589 + GST bit over the top if you ask me! - only thing is iv never changed box and diff oil before...

nelson scoob are usually pretty good for buying parts;
gearbox on an n/a is easier as you have access to the dipstick without removing an intercooler, Rear diff is pretty easy too, just make sure you can undo the filler hole before the drain hole- no good draining a diff you cant fill.

Not too bad actually if you have proper tools and your fingers are not like fat sausages but rather nice thin frankfurters :)

Was also easier to access from under the car.

I'm fine with 4 cyl, just not sure how far back the cylinders sit on the 3.0 is all. Those little Bahco swivel socket tools are amazing for doing plugs.

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay so I just got a price for a 50k service for my 2006 3.0R Legacy and they have said its $790 incl GST??

Seems way to steep to me!?

What do others think? looks like I might have to learn how to do the gear and diff oil change myself..

I just checked with crowesport and they quoted me 450 incl lol

ask for a breakdown of labour and materials...that you can make sure they two quotes are acutally for the same thing?

Do you have an auto or a manual? Flushing auto trans is expensive because of the amount of ATF you use.

Lol i did now that they have done a breakdown its gone up to $918.03

Holy S*** is the oil made from gold and 1.5hrs to do a can of upper engine cleaner??

TBH that isn't really THAT expensive for a dealer. You could for sure do it cheaper yourself but...

Is the oils made from gold? How much do you normally pay for your oil? $77 for 5.2L of 5w30 oil (assuming it is quality stuff) is similar to what you would pay off the shelf at supercheap or similar.

$200 of that is trans oil which as @willisnz said is just expensive stuff. You could probably get this cheaper elsewhere but it is annoying to change in an auto IMO.

Another $120 is gst.

Labour is expensive at a garage because that's what it takes to run a business with overheads and qualified staff.

In that breakdown they are also changing every serviceable fluid/filter. Whether that is actually necessary is up to you.

I'm not saying $918 dollars isn't a lot of money, but if you look at the breakdown they really aren't ripping you off. If I were you I'd do the service myself however.

Edit: The cabin filter is pretty overpriced, but everyone seems to do that for some reason. If you look at cost vs retail for somewhere like ripco. Cost is usually $20-30 on a cabin filter and they put rrp at $70-90. Not sure why the industry standard for cabin filter price is so high when they really aren't expensive to manufacture.

The quoted price seems reasonable, oil quality is the big thing, if you cheap out on the quality of oil why even change it.

$95 an hour for a car tech is pretty much the going rate,You want to get big bills try heavy diesel tech :) ( I am one )

servicing takes time to do right, and you want it done right, which of course brings up another reason to get a dealer to do it WARRANTY, the work will come with a warranty.

Okay thats interesting thanks for the feedback guys i guess I've never really had to do a 50k service, i also notice they would change the brake fluid and coolant is this really necessary?

I guess you just need to work out what you can do yourself and what it is worth paying someone else to do. I try and distinguish being "paying for expertise" and "paying for time".  I've made a point of learning to do oil changes myself as that is just time. I personally don't feel comfortable touching the trans at the moment, as too much/too little oil can do funny things in auto.

Personally I would do oil + upper engine + cabin filter myself.  If you do coolant yourself, it's a bitch to dispose of legally from memory (there is another thread on here about that).  Brakes/coolant/trans are out of my current comfort zone but at the very least brakes and diff are things I plan on learning to do eventually.

And RE cabin filters, it also depends on whether it is an activated carbon one or not. If it is, they are expensive, if it isn't, $70 is way to much.

Coolant is necessary, it has a life span, usually about 5 years and do we know when it was last changed ?

Once again a few dollars to change the brake fluid ( also has a life span and is anhydrous so sucks water out of the air) is cheaper than caliper rebuilds

Going on that getting rid of your waste engine oil is getting harder as well ( I will take as much as I can get as I heat my house with it )

In Auckland there is a collection program where there are big bins outside Supercheap and Repco you can drop it off at which is super handy, no idea what the deal is in Nelson!

Cost on those fluids is an absolute joke. Unfortunatly its not uncommon to see those prices in generic workshops...not sure why workshops quibble over 0.50c on a $3.50 oil filter then charge the customer $25 either...

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
