Cheap boost mod

Cheap boost mod - anti wastegate creep

This is a very cheap way of getting on full boost quicker with a factory setup. Costs under $10 for replacement wastegate hose.

Wastegate creep is when the wastegate is starting to open even tho your car is nowhere near full boost. As most wastegates work off springs they are set up to creep open as boost builds up. So your turbo is not spooling up as fast as it could since some of the exhust gas is being directed through the wastegate. The standard factory set up is designed to create a smooth increase in boost - thus smooth torque and power. However if u just want power more quickly there are ways around this.

Increase the size of the hose going to the wastegate. Either by increasing it's length or diameter. The idea is for the manifold boost presure to not activate the wastegate as quick as standard. Thus instead of the factory system slowly building up to full boost, with this larger hose max boost arrives much quicker.

I have used this on my Twin Turbo Legacy in the past and it works quite well for the dollars spent. To do this a boost gauge is definitely needed and a bit of testing to find out exactly how much extra pipe u need. Ideally u increase the wastegate hose so boost comes on much quicker but not so big that u get boost spikes. I no longer use this system, from it i moved to a manual boost control and then to a Prova ECU

Note this will not increase boost unless the wastegate hose is made too big. And even then it will only cause spikes and is something i would not recommend. A good way of blowing up your turbo, engine or both. So play with this mod at your own risk.

Images are gone BUT I bet you can figure it out

AFM Bellmouth Mod

For a few dollars anyone can improve AFM airbox design.

On the road the car feels stronger and smoother in part throttle situations. With the full metal bellmouth installed there was a noticable improvement - cruising at 100kph seemed to need less accelerator than before - while mid to top end power was also better.

This has been one of the best bang for buck performance mods I have ever done . I can not believe how good the car feels on the road. On the dyno which of course only measures max power situations - peak power has increased just under 2% with the topend powercurve now higher and less peaky. For example before there was only a 300rpm range above 145kw atw - after this peak power has extended to a 800rpm range. (Pictures to come)

Why use a bellmouth ?

A bellmouth can flow 25% better than a straight pipe. The sharp edged plain opening is the least efficient because most of the air is sucked in from right next to the duct. As it makes the sharp turn into the duct, its inertia makes it overshoot a little bit and the flow constricts to as little as 70% of the duct diameter a short distance inside the end of the duct. Whereas a properly designed bellmouth is 98% efficient. The air follows the lip of the bellmouth into the pipe thus it does not constrict the flow of the pipe.

Installation Guide

1. Many cars have a bellmouth in front of the air flow meter to aid flow. Well if your Legacy doesn't have one, make your own ! Similar to other bellmouths it should reduce turbulence and increase airflow. This is a very cheap mod with the cost being effectively zero. Flare the end of a PVC pipe with a heatgun, cut to size and fit. Note you may need with a heat gun to make the base of the PVC pipe bigger or smaller to fit.

2. Although your Legacy may not have a full metal bellmouth, it is still possible to bolt one on. In Japan there were a range of bellmouths made for JCES Air Flow Meters . Again this is a cheap upgrade to a factory designed metal bellmouth.

The bellmouth on the left bolted straight on to the existing AFM bolts - with no further modifications needed. If anyone is interested in buying a bolt on bellmouth for there Legacy - contact me [email protected] - as i might have 1 or 2 spare for sale.

3. Installed

IC Waterspray Controller

DIY Waterspray controller

FEATURE
Keeps excessive heating down and allows continuous driving runs, with power.
Decreases temperature for in-going air to the intercooler, enabling better combustion and increasing air intake amount for more power.

USE
There are various ways to cool your intercooler.
It can be set to spray continuously or a preset pulse on/off (eg 5 seconds on 7 seconds off) and the ability to automatically turn on at a pre-set intercooler temperature the turn off at a preset temperature.

An Update:

All though happy with the inital cooling effect of the waterspray it did tend to use alot of water. One of the downsides of a high flow rate.

Very quickly the IC is drenched in water and if the sprayer continues running water is wasted. Which is fine for one off applications and u don't forget to turn off the sprayer. However for continued running i thought i needed to modify the system.......

Instead of installing a mega tank in the boot i decided to add a timer relay to "pulse" the spray pattern. This is a very sophisticated timer which can be adapted for two different types of uses. The first is "one shot" operation, which can be used to squirt water spray for a period of time. The second is a "pulse" type operation, which can be used to squirt water spray for example 1 second every 9 seconds. The set time is adjustable from 0.1 seconds, to 16.5 minutes via easy to use (and accurate) digital switches.

For example if u set the timer to spray for 10 seconds on then 10 seconds off, then 10 seconds on .....etc etc

You will halve your water consumption whilst retain the high inital flow rates.

Next I installed an automatic function based on temperature. Using a Adjustable Temperature Switch. You can set this switch to turn on at say 35C and then turn off at say 30C. So the set up has two switches now - one for manual mode and one for automatic. With the correct temperatures set up this mode does not use alot of water and allows the IC temperatures to quickly get back to normal levels. It helps stop a drop off in performance from a hot IC unit.

Good for times when u don't want to monitor IC temps and sprayer operation manually. Whilst u still have the manual mode to operate any time u think u may need that extra performance of a very cool IC.

Currently i have it set for 3 seconds on 9 seconds off. This gets the IC wet whilst allowing time for evaporation before the next pulse. The temperature switch is set at approx 35C - atm in summer this means boosting for a short while will trigger the spray.

In a blank switch panel i installed a red led light to indicate when the IC sprayer was in operation.

Legacy Makes 3 Million

Cumulative worldwide production of the Subaru Legacy reached three million units on March 14.

This milestone was achieved 16 years and four months after the company started production in its Gunma Yajima Plant in November 1988.

Developed as a successor to the Subaru Leone, the first-generation Legacy was introduced in Japan in February 1989. Since its birth, the Legacy has been designed and built to ensure driving pleasure. The first-generation Legacy established a new FIA-certified, world speed record in the continuous 100,000-kilometre drive with an average speed of 223.345 km/h2, a record that still stands today, proof of the models high performance and reliability.

The Station Wagon GT, which included a high-performance engine, was introduced in Japan in 1993 and quickly gained popularity in the growing market for recreational vehicles. It played a pioneering role in Japans emerging market for station wagons.

In September 1989, production of the Legacy began in the U.S. at Subaru Isuzu Automotive Inc. (now known as Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc., SIA). Based on the Legacy wagon and created around the concept of a crossover sport-utility vehicle, the Outback model was introduced in the U.S. in 1995, boosting Subaru sales and elevating the Legacy to the status of a major model that has become strategically important for FHI.

Today, the fourth-generation Legacy continues to enjoy popularity and high acclaim from car enthusiasts. The Legacy has further improved driving performance and achieved unprecedented levels of weight reduction, while still ensuring crashworthiness in its safety performance. The current Legacy model was awarded the Car of the Year in Japan for 2003-2004. Worldwide sales in 2004 amounted to 201,645 units.

Check Engine Light Codes (CEL)

To identify an existing fault, you will need to follow the following procedure. Please also note that the ECU light flashes to indicate the error code, the slow flashes which come first are the tens digits. The fast flashes that come second are the single digits. For example, an error code of 13 will be one slow flash and 3 quick flashes straight after the first flash, then their will be a short break and it will flash the sequence again.

Identify ECU Fault Code

  • With ignition OFF, locate black (note in very early Legacys this maybe white) ECU check connector below dashboard on left side of drivers foot well. It will be two small black connectors, one female and one male which will probably be alongside the ECU reset connectors which are green.
  • Turn the ignition ON and identify how many times the check engine light flashes (if any). This will be the error code stored in the ECU memory.
  • Locate the fault code in the chart below and this will identify the fault. If you feel the fault is incorrect, you can reset the ECU by using the procedure below.
  • Turn ignition OFF and unplug the connectors.

ECU Reset

  • With ignition OFF, locate the 2 black ECU check connectors and the 2 green ECU reset connectors  below dashboard on left side of drivers foot well. There will be one female and one male of each color (Black & Green).
  • Connect the black connectors together, and connect the green connectors together.
  • Start the vehicle and drive until the check engine light starts flashing. ENSURE THE VEHICLE SPEED REMAINS ABOVE 11 Km/h.
  • If there is no fault, the check engine light should flash steadily. If there is a fault, the check engine light will flash the appropriate code which can be checked against the table below and the fault rectified ASAP.
  • Stop engine and turn ignition OFF.
  • Disconnect the two black and two green connectors.

For example a car with the model code, "BD5C49D" when worked through should give you a Legacy Sedan that has 4 doors (well it is a sedan!) and has the specifications of a GT/RS and is powered by a 5speed manual gearbox, with a center diff. DOHC turbo engine.

Use the following table to work out your car.

Car Type 1st Column 2nd Column 3rd Column 4th Column 5th Column 6th Column 7th Column
Legacy B C = 1st generation sedan
D = 2nd generation sedan
E = 3rd generation sedan
L = 4th generation sedan
F = 1st generation wagon
G = 2nd generation wagon
H = 3rd generation wagon
P = 4th generation wagon
5 = 2.0 4WD  Yearly Model Type Change
A, B, C, D, & etc
4 = 4 door (sedan)
5 = 5 doors (wagon)
NB:-
Some first generation legacy wagons may have the value 4.
Need to check this.
Number range from 3 to 9
The higher the number the higher the grade of the car.
Relates to the model and car specification.

See table below
D = 5MT center diff. DOHC turbo
P = 4AT DOHC turbo VTD
T = sport shift DOHC turbo
The grade or specification of the car taken from the seventh column of the Model Number.
1 = A = a starting point - no cars have this spec.
2 = B = Basic
3 = C = Casual
4 = E = Economy, extra, something else than basic
5 = G = Grandwagon, Good
6 = L = Luxury, Lancaster
7 = R = Racing
8 = S = Sport
9 = GT Super Touring and combining VTD

BC Sedan ~ 223km/h World Record

ab-hi-1989-pic-001.jpg Location : Arizona Test Center, Arizona, U.S.A.
Record : Average speed of 223.345 km/h(world speed record certified by the FIA)
Vehicle : Legacy RS
In 1989, from January 2 through 21, the first-generation Legacy established a new 100,000-kilometer world speed record at the Arizona Test Center located on the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona. The 100,000-kilometer distance was covered in 447 hours, 44 minutes, and 9.887 seconds, with an average speed of 223.345 km/h, thus setting a new world speed record.
.
ab-hi-1989-pic-002.jpg The vehicles that challenged the world speed record were based on the first-generation Legacy AWD four-door sedan RS, which had a five-gear manual transmission. Partial adjustments were made to the vehicles in keeping withthe F d ration International de l'Automobile (FIA) international sports regulations, but the vehicles were virtually the same as mass-produced models. The first-generation Legacy was entered to challenge the world records for 100,000 kilometers and 50,000 miles, as well as the international records for Category A (vehicles not having an annual mass production of 5,000 or more units*)/ Group I (gasoline engine)/ Class 7 (1,500cc-2,000 cc).
*The attempt took place just prior to the announcement of the first-generation Legacy, so permission had not yet been obtained for producing 5,000 units. Consequently, the challenge had to be made in Category A.
ab-hi-1989-pic-003.jpg The setting for the attempt, at the Arizona Test Center, was an oval course 9.182 kilometers in circumference. The vehicle had to travel continuously for 100,000 kilometers, and its average speed would be calculated. Naturally, the pit time was included in the calculation. During the attempt, refueling, tire changes, and driver changes could be done at will, but the more pit stops made, the greater was the loss in time. Three Legacy vehicles started the long attempt to conquer the seemingly endless 10,891 laps around the oval course at the Arizona Test Center.
ab-hi-1989-pic-004.jpg The time was 11 minutes and 56 seconds past 3:00 a.m., January 21, 1989. It was 447 hours, 44 minutes, and 9.887 seconds after the start. This was the moment when the Legacy outdid all automobiles by completing the 100,000-kilometer distance in the fastest time ever. What's more, this was a perfect accomplishment, with all three cars breaking the existing speed record by more than 10 km/h.
This attempt to break the world and international speed records was part of a competition officially recognized by the FIA and was conducted in compliance with the strict rules set down by the FIA. Further, the measuring instruments that calculated the automobile's speed and the people judging the attempt must have official FIA approval. The competition was supervised by the Automobile Competition Committee for the United States (ACCUS) and its subordinate organization, the United States Auto Club (USAC).

■About LEGACY RS type R & type RA

There may be many people who do not know first generation Legacy RS "typeR" & "typeRA"

●RS-R
The debut of first Legacy was the end of January, 1989 (February 1 release). The turbo car was only sedan RS of 5MT at first.
In October, the same year, RS-R is added in accordance with a debut of GT which is a turbo car of a wagon (and 4AT version of sedan RS).
It is written with "a basic grade model of RS which is suitable as the material of a competition car for motor sports" and a new car commentary book.

●RS-RA
 In November, '89 (December 1 release), pure competition car base for motor sports, RS-RA of a STi tune appear.Therefore the position of RS-R became considerably vague debut two months later.
It is written with a new car commentary book with "the order production RA memory model that executed engine fine-tuning same as the challenge car that 100000km speed records RS-R in a base."

RA seems to mean, 100000km speed record challenge "RECORD ATTEMPT" instead of RA of Rally.
(There is an opinion that RA means "Race groupA")

RS-RA put a fine tune to a rally and a dirt trial competition to be based on RS-R more.

As for the engine, forging piston and high resist pressure connecting rod metal are built in, and, as for the intake port and exhaust port, it is revised gap and polished up.
A crankshaft and the flywheel which got of balance are mounted the car with.If it is a beginner's class level, suspension is strengthened to the rank who can participate as it is.Variable ratio power steering is important, too.As for this, the steering gear ratio becomes quick.

Without close ratio transmission, it was announced as 100-limited model at first.Actually, seem to have continued job-order production of 20 monthly productions.
Long-awaited close ratio transmission was carried than a B type from May, '90, and increased with a catalogue model.

Engine specifications do not change from a latter period model C type, but ECU becomes 16bit, and a torque up in middle low rev .(be said by an emission control that became mild) and continued to exist to the last D type, and handed over a duty of RA of legacy to impreza WRX-RA with full model change-over, and the grade of RA disappeared from legacy.

BH Wagon ~ 270km/h World Record

ab-hi-1998-pic-001.jpg Location : Colorado, U.S.A.

Record : Average speed of 270.532 km/h
(the world's fastest production station wagon certified by the FIA and ACCUS for the mass-produced car category, turbo engine, 1,600cc-2,000cc class)

Vehicle : Legacy Touring Wagon GT-B
(third-generation domestic Legacy Station Wagon, turbo model)

ab-hi-1998-pic-003.jpg Specifications for the model used are essentially the same as those for commercially available models, with the addition of a six-point roll cage, fire extinguisher, five-point seat belt, and safety bucket seat as safety equipment.
ab-hi-1998-pic-004.jpg This attempt was conducted on an ordinary road with all the usual bumps, so conditions could hardly be described as desirable for breaking a world record. The chief mechanic, Kazuo Nakasato, described the significance of the challenge as follows: "This kind of record event is normally held on a circuit that has the best surface conditions possible and is generally held on test courses. However, we opted for the highway because we wanted the owners to see the perfection of the new Legacy and the superiority of the AWD system's 'Active Driving, Active Safety.' Through Subaru's positivism, I think this was a great opportunity for us to demonstrate Subaru's philosophy in making cars."
The Legacy Station Wagon was driven by David Donner, who has competed in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and the NASCAR Sun Bank 24 Hours of Daytona. And the third-generation Legacy broke the previous record of 244.98 km/h, which had been established by the second generation on salt flats, by a wide margin on a highway. The significantly higher speed achieved for the current record is evidence of the even-greater potential of the Legacy Station Wagon following a full model change.
ab-hi-1998-pic-002.jpg On April 23, 1998, at the FIA qualified course on Highway 10 in La Junta, Colorado, the Legacy Station Wagon set a new world record at an amazing speed (average speed over one kilometer: 270.532 km/h; average speed over one mile: 270.047 km/h), drastically surpassing the previous record set by a second-generation Legacy in 1993.

BG Wagon ~ 249km/h World Record

ab-hi-1993-pic-001.jpg Location : Bonneville Speedway, Utah, U.S.A.
Record : Average speed of 249.981 km/h
(world speed record certified by the FIA and ACCUS for mass-produced, unmodified station wagons)
Vehicle : Legacy Touring Wagon GT

On September 9, 1993, the Legacy Touring Wagon set a new world speed record in the mass-produced, unmodified station wagon division at the Bonneville Speedway near Salt Lake City, Utah, with an average speed of 249.981 kilometers.
ab-hi-1993-pic-002.jpg The model making the attempt was the five-speed manual Legacy Touring Wagon GT, a Japanese domestic turbo model. To assure impartiality for the competing cars, the FIA directed the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) to serve as witness when the vehicle was selected at random from the production line of FHI's Yajima Plant in Gunma Prefecture; the selected cars were sealed on the spot with the engine and vehicle serial codes. For the record attempt, a six-point roll bar, five-point seat belts, a safety fuel tank, and other safety equipment were added, and the speed limiter was removed. Otherwise, however, the model was exactly the same as the one on the market, with air-conditioning equipment and sunroof mounted.
ab-hi-1993-pic-003.jpg The site of the record attempt was the Bonneville Speedway, located on a plateau 1,300 meters above sea level and 160 kilometers west of Salt Lake City. Although it is called a speedway, it is not a bitumen surfaced course but a salt flat that appears only during the summer when part of the Great Salt Lake dries out. Here, a straight 11-kilometer course is prepared, going from southeast to northeast. The salt surface is extremely slippery, and the thin air at that altitude means that engines lose power. For most cars, it is a very tough course.
ab-hi-1993-pic-004.jpg The competition that the Legacy Touring Wagon GT entered, which was driven by race car driver John Andretti, was officiated by the FIA and ACCUS. The record attempt was held in accordance with the FIA regulations on speed records. The competition time was within one hour. The measurement was a round trip on a one-kilometer and one-mile stretch, with the average speed taken. If trouble occurred and only one length of the track was completed, the car would be disqualified.

      Afternoon team,
      im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
      Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

      Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.
