First Subaru

Hey all,

New to the site and Subaru's in general.

I'm looking at purchasing my first this weekend. And wanted to know whether there is anything I should be checking/looking for when I test drive this weekend. Also, whether there are any big differences between the 2l and 3.0r's other than engine size. Also whether these prices are realistic for the vehicles.

Here are the vehicles on the list so far:

Thanks in advance for your help and advice :)

Welcome.

I have been in a 2.0 non turbo and 3.0 non turbo, I would go for the 3.0 just because the 2.0 is too slow for me. 3.0 would be pretty thirsty tho.

Edit: I would get the 2.0 Turbo over the 3.0 but it depends what you want it for.

The 3.0s are fantastic on long drives in terms of economy. My old one got just on 700km per tank.

If you can, get a manual 3.0 or 2.0 turbo. And as new as you can afford.

The pre-facelift (2003-2006 ish) 2.0 turbo autos are well known to cook the turbo

The non turbos below the 3.0 are a bit of a false economy, it's still a reasonably heavy car, and the smaller motors are just... Woefully underpowered. The 2.5 single overhead cams are notorious for cooking headgasket too.

I love my 3.0, very smooth and torquey unit. They aren't V8 level bad on petrol around town, but they're no 4cyl Honda either, last time I looked I think I was getting ~7.5km/l city and ~12km/l highway.

Agree with @Kiwi_Fozze to get the newest you can afford. Facelift models are just that - facelifted, the front grill, head and tail lights and front and rear bumper are different among other things. Also my auto box will occasionally hang onto gears for too long (holding 2nd when clearly it should be in 3rd), but these are bugs that I believe can be fixed with a TCU flash from by Subaru.

Yeah, definitely a 3.0 or the 2.0 Turbo. Out of those 3, I'd go for the black 2007 one for sure.

Do you see anything untoward with it?

When I take it for a test is there anything in particular I should be looking for. Main reason I like it is that it's had the stereo conversion done and has NZ nav too.

Don't have too much to add beyond what others have said. What type of driving do you mostly do?  I have a 3.0 which I commute in during peak traffic in AKL and it chews through gas...love it on the open road though.

Also own a NA 2.0 and it is pretty soulless.

Manual are generally a couple grand more than auto.

I like the black one of those three.  Interested to see what the exhaust sounds like as it says it has a cat-back, think that means the stock mid muffler is gone (others can confirm).  Easy to make these cars sound bad if you delete mid-muffler.  So make sure you take it for a cruise on the motorway and also put your foot down a few times.

On the subject of Facelift...when I bought my '07 BP5  that has a grille like this  I thought that was facelift but it seems they actually all have the one with the bar across them (like all the ones on Trade Me that OP linked). I've also seen some that have a similar one to mine but it's recessed and has a bigger honeycomb type mesh. What models got what?

The grille does not determine whether the vehicle is a face lift model, merely a result of the different specifications. To the best of my knowledge some of the grilles are interchangeable between the pre-face lift and face lift models - dependent on the spec of the vehicle of course. The face lift included (but not limited to) a re-design of the front bumper, headlight housing, bonnet, wing mirrors, tail/brake light housing and garnish on the tail gate door.

I like the pre-face lift GT Spec B wheels and the Face lift GT Spec B honeycomb grille.
