Passenger side, under back seat, mystery panel

Morning all,

 

Just went and replaced the fuel filter in my '99 Subaru B4 this morning, and was wondering what is under the panel on the passenger side of the car, under the back seat?

 

Fuel pump assembly was on the driver's side, and was in great condition. The panel on the passenger side looks a bit worn, and when the cover/panel was undone I got a whiff of gas.

 

Can anyone shed light on what it is, I haven't seen any mention of it in the guides/videos showing how to do the fuel pump/filter replacement.

Just a guess but fuel return or breather and fuel level sender is common in 4wd and rwd cars since the tank has almost two halves due to clearing the driveshaft.

 

best to return warmed fuel to as far from the pump as you can.

I found a photo of it in Rosssub's Fuel Pump Rewire thread, which he refers to as the fuel sub level sensor assembly access cover.
