OUR STORY

SUBARU HERITAGE

Trace Subaru's history of vehicle development
back to the 1950s.

1950’s

1950. JUL

Fuji jidosha Kogyo, Co., Ltd., established.

Fuji Sangyo was divided into 12 companies in accordance with the corporate credit rearrangement law in 1950. Fuji Jidosha was chiefly involved in bodywork for buses and developing the small P-1 concept car.

1953. JUL

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., established.

In 1953 Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. was created as an aircraft manufacturing, sales, and maintenance company through investments from five companies: Fuji Kogyo, Fuji Jidosha, Omiya Fuji Kogyo, Utsunomiya Sharyo and Tokyo Fuji Sangyo. Two years later, these five investors merged with FHI and embarked on full-scale business activities of the FHI that we know today.

Prototype 4-wheel passenger vehicle P-1 completed.

003.jpg

The P-1, named the Subaru 1500 the following year, used the first Japanese-manufactured monocoque body. This passenger car provided excellent riding comfort and driving stability with its front-wheel wishbone-type independent suspension with a coil spring and double-action oil damper combination, and rear-wheel rigid axle suspension with a three-leaf spring and double-action oil damper combination.

1957. APR

Prototype K-10 (Subaru 360) completed.

004.jpg

The major issues present with the prototype K-10 included achieving a lighter body, easier production, sufficient interior space to accommodate four adults, excellent ride comfort, and developing a lightweight and high-power, high-durability engine. In addition to the monocoque body used to achieve a lighter weight, the head of each and every rivet was filed down to save weight - technology that had previously been used in aircraft was used extensively throughout the prototype.

1958. MAR

Subaru 360 minicar unveiled

On March 3, 1958, a passenger car with a distinctive individuality was released: the Subaru 360. At the time, Japanese automobile manufacturers were working on developing small “people's” cars as advocated by the Japanese government. With its roots in aircraft manufacturing, Subaru took up the challenge of building a small, affordable car that could perform well, and the four-passenger, four-wheel Subaru 360 minicar became a milestone in the history of Japan's automobile industry. Dubbed the Ladybird due to its distinct shape, the Subaru 360 enjoyed tremendous popularity for more than a decade before finally ceasing production in May 1970.

Subaru Sambar truck released

1st generation Sambar
In February 1961, the Subaru Sambar made its debut. The Sambar, based on the Subaru 360, was a truck that was outstandingly pleasant to ride and stable to drive. Compared with other four-wheel minitrucks of its day, the Subaru Sambar had the lowest deck body and the roomiest cargo bed. With its ability to neatly negotiate narrow street corners, this minitruck was a breath of fresh air in the industrial world. The following September, the Sambar Light Van was launched as a vehicle for not only commercial use, but also leisure use. With the Sambar, Subaru became firmly established as a manufacturer of light passenger vehicles.

4-door sedan released

Released in May 1966 as FHI’s first compact passenger car powered by the boxer engine, the Subaru 1000 offered driving stability and a comfortable interior, as well as technical features such as the front-wheel drive platform, Horizontally-Opposed engine and centre-pivot steering wheel. The outstanding body design “befitting of a 1,500 cc model” combined with numerous proprietary functions stemming from FHI’s aeronautical background. The D.O.J. (double offset joint) constant velocity joint, inboard brakes and independent four-wheel suspension system helped to reduce the unsprung weight of the car. The 1000 redefined the front-wheel drive concept with its smooth and precise control, comfort and durability.

Replacing the Subaru 360, the Subaru R-2 was introduced in August 1969. Designed for the new era, the R-2 was a minisedan that attracted great interest for its role in expanding the concept of the minicar. The R-2 performed well and was engineered for the “highway era” that Japan was entering, and its excellent balance meant the R-2 could be driven with ease on rough roads. With its refined style and roomy interior that could comfortably seat four people, the R-2 was a tribute to the Subaru engineers who built on their experience with the Subaru 360 to expand the minicar concept.

Leone coupe released

1st generation Leone
The Subaru Leone made its debut in June 1971, followed by the Subaru Leone 4WD Station Wagon in September 1972. Until then, four-wheel drive (4WD) was limited to off-road vehicles, however Subaru broke that tradition with a mass-produced 4WD variant of an ordinary passenger model. When the vehicle was first released, demand came mainly as a result of the special applications that the car could be used for, such as commercial use in snowy and mountainous areas. Yet the car was also highly praised in both the domestic and overseas markets for its novel design. The vehicle had steadily broadened its customer base thanks to a surge in popularity of outdoor sports like skiing and fishing. The car's popularity snowballed to the point where it became the world's top-selling 4WD passenger car, and is the origin of the Subaru AWD system.

Legacy series released

1st generation Legacy
Released in February 1989, Subaru took its first step into the 2.0-litre automobile market with its Subaru Legacy. Charged with the task of creating a sedan that would take its place on the world stage as a leader in the era, the design team started from scratch but eventually settled on “using a Horizontally-Opposed Engine and an AWD system, thus following the traditional Subaru technologies but at the same time rendering these as a mature compilation tailored for the new era.” In this way, the Legacy incorporated traditional Subaru technologies but was still a completely new design embodying high-quality driving performance. The line-up consisted of a 4-door Sedan and a Station Wagon, with the latter instigating a station wagon boom in Japan. In 1998, the third-generation Legacy was introduced.

This, combined with drawing the C pillar from directly above the rear wheel arch, helped to give the car a more aggressive look. The touring wagon was designed with windows that wrapped around from the side to the rear, and featured a stepped roof profile in what were common design elements evident in the previous generation. The trapezoidal shape of the front grille was also implemented new.

Advanced passenger SUV, the Forester, released

1st generation Forester
The Subaru Forester made its debut in February 1997. The Forester combined the strong points of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a passenger car as a vehicle of a new genre based on the "best of both" concept. The basic chassis was virtually the same as that of the 1993 Legacy, a fully changed model. However, the Forester's wheelbase was reduced, ground clearance increased 200 mm and overall height to 1,580 mm. Hence, while the Forester possessed superior driving performance for poor road conditions and a high driving position required for SUVs, it still provided pleasant ride comfort for those on board.
