Handling Upgrades - 07 Legacy GT-B Wagon

Evening all.

Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on aftermarket front/rear sway bars and a a front strut brace?

Ive heard mixed reviews in terms of comfort changes.

I have the opportunity to get some decent front/rear sway bars and a genome front strut for A solid price. I feel that the Legacy  suffers from understeer and a less planets feel on the road when cornering at speed.

For those who have done it, what was the change in ride(comfort/handling) like and was it worth it?

In my BH I have a front strutbrace (STI), rear sway bar (whiteline), underbody k-frame (cusco), rear strutbrace (Z/S). They were installed in that order (months between each one).

Not sure how they will effect a BG/BP, but below is what I encountered on my BH

After the front brace, noticed no (maybe a little bit) difference. When the rear sway bar was installed I noticed a huge difference. The rear was less boat-like, centred/re-balanced a lot faster and has invoked less understeer and some more tail movement. k-frame really helped with the turn in and corner stability, also reduced understeer. The rear strut tower was noticeable, firm up the rear part of the car, felt a bit less body twist (not roll) in the corners.

No comfort loss, but definitely a handling change.

To rank the braces I have:

  1. rear sway bar
  2. k frame
  3. rear strut
  4. front strut

Someone else may argue that the order should be different, but this is what I thought. I'm not sure on front sway bars, but think that they may introduce some more understeer - happy for someone to correct me on this

can you Narrow down what Chassis or year GTB you have? they range from the GT/B Spec in 1993 to late 2000's GT - B Specs ie 2nd Gen through to the 4th Gen Legacy's 2005

might be obvious to others who have seen your posts but will help the guru's narrow down what path to track down :P

Rear sway bar only.  Pick up a front strut brace if you want to though, they are cheap.

I have all the braces.  Front and rear, upper and lower.  White line bars front and rear and adjustable suspension.  IMO, the front sway bar is too much, it cant deal with tight corners such as round abouts in the rain as it just doesn't roll enough.

Sorry guys it’s a 07 Legacy Gt-B Wagon :P  If this helps haha.

So would a rear sway bar and front strut brace (out of the 3 items available) be the ideal combination?

I definetly dont want want to introduce more understeer if a front sway bar may do so!!

Would the rear sway bar be able to be installed at home too? I’m always keen to do things myself where I can as I have plenty of tools

Yep, easy install. Even easier if you have ramps. Bit harder with jack stands. It's about 6-8 bolts/nuts, 2x2 for the sway bar mounts and 1 (or 2 if you're changing endlinks) on each end of the sway bar

Check out my post...

Front strut brace, does sweet F all but is STi and looks cool (as mentioned previously, cheap as chips so why not).

Ultra Racing 21mm solid rear sway bar, generic adjustable endlinks from BNT. MASSIVE improvement, highly recommend as up-rated RSB.

Ultra Racing 2 point rear lower brace, unsure of the benefit alone as all these components were installed together... Probably does something.

Ultra Racing 4 point front lower 'K' brace, won't fit my model - is sitting in my garage...

D2 adjustable coilovers with 32 way damping and front camber plates, biggest benefit to handling by lowering centre of gravity and reducing body roll (along with RSB).

Truhart (not the best brand but they work) adjustable rear camber arms as too low and need to correct rear camber...

Bridgestone Potenza RE003.

Harsher ride provided by the adjustable coilovers which is my preference, all other bracing etc wouldn't sacrifice comfort in my opinion.

Still the VERY BEST handling modification you can make is to purchase a good set of tyres, no point having all these upgraded components with some cheap and nastys on all four corners (god forbid they're mismatched too). The RE003 I have currently are incredible and I doubt I'll ever buy another brand/model of tyre again.

I love this set up, I throw this car into corners at speeds that others would only dream of! Always holds its line and has ZERO body roll. Peace ✌🏼

Prowholesale in Tauranga do. Alot of stuff they can get is available but not listed on the site so you just chuck them an email for pricing and availability

https://www.pro-wholesale.co.nz/

Yeahp, got my Ultra Racing parts from them.

These are an 18mm rear and 22mm front sway bars, are these a lot thicker in comparison to the oem ones?

An 18mm rear sway bar isn't much of an upgrade... As mentioned, my rear one is a solid 22mm.

Do you know what the standard diameters are? If it’s a minimal gain for the rear then is it worth it?

I can get a 21mm rear and the lower brace from pro wholesale so ist the 3mm increase worth the extra $100 in price?

I stand corrected, is actually a 21mm bar.

I would say yes. But depends on what type the 18mm bar you're looking at is... it would be neutral gain or even a downgrade potentially.

ps. my set (as stated above) may or may not be coming up for sale in the next couple of months...

Coming from a RWD prone to oversteer, I totally feel ya when you say that the legacy understeers!

Front braces / sway bars or anything like that will likely increase understeer so I would avoid those.

+1 to what @JGM said, good sum up.

I went with :

- Whiteline adjustable RSB (20mm) on the stiff setting

- Ultra racing lower brace

- Sachs shock absorbers

The RSB makes a massive difference in the middle of the corner and corner exit (allows you to put some more power without understeer). It won't fix the understeer if you enter a corner too fast though. If your suspensions are shot it's worth changing them as well. In my case it was night and day between the Sachs and the 150 000 km stock suspensions.

I installed the Ultra racing lower brace after installing the RSB and I don't think it makes a noticeable difference. The reason I bought it was to reinforce the sway bar mounts. My sway bar mounts were actually slightly bent when I installed the lower brace so I reckon it's a good purchase.

The way my car is currently setup, I reckon I have a good balance for performance applications. When cornering at the grip limit, at half throttle :

- If I accelerate more, I get understeer

- If I release the throttle, I get oversteer

Which makes it really easy to keep the racing line you want.

Except if you like driving at the limit or drifting, this way you can do it at slower speeds 9_9

(I have shitty tyres and don't mind it)

I recommend you try the Michelin PS4 bro.

I had the PS3 on 2 cars and they are similar to the RE003, just a little better on the rain. The PS4 are a good notch above in every domain.

And they also last longer than both the RE003 and the PS3, which makes good value for the money.

When I'm done with my shitty tyres I reckon I'll get these.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
