Help - Engine Seized

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I have a 2ltr Legacy GTB and the engine seized up today, don't really know for sure what it is but the engine just cut out and won't start up again, sounded like a lot of knocking before it cut out. Either way it looks like I will need and engine/turbo replacement or find someone who can recondition my engine/turbo back to running condition.

Would anyone be able to recommend someone who could recondition my engine/turbo?

I currently have a quote of $2300 for an engine/turbo replacement + $500 fitting, looking at calling up Strong for Subaru and a few other wreckers on Monday to get more quotes, the alternative is to import an engine/turbo from Japan. Also does anyone know if I can fit a better turbo onto the engine? And if so, what model? What other mods would I need to do? As the factory turbo is rubbish.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Honestly I would replace it rather than recondition a motor that has almost certainly run the bottom end. Buy locally so it has a 60 day warranty or something.

Dunno why you would be replacing the turbos (you almost certainly have 2 of them?) with the motor. Seems like a lot of additional expense for not much reason.

There is very, very little point in modifying the twin-turbos. The gains are extremely minimal for the cost/complication. The hose mods are worth doing and that's about it. The only worthwhile mod is a single-turbo conversion.

It’s a BP5 not 3rd gen BTW.

So while not always cheap, upgrading to something STI spec or better gives them the go they need

Ah! I didn't know there was a GTB in the BP's.

If you want to change the turbo to an STI item you'll need to replace the headers, uppipe and downpipe, and probably have something done to mate that downpipe with your midpipe. Combined with a tune and an aftermarket fuelpump it'll likely be good for 190-200wkw which will be a whole lot peppier than they are standard.

Technically their isn’t, GT Spec B is the correct, but longer way of saying what is essentially the same thing. Same way half the 3rd gen GTB’s are really just GT’s

Should get a bit more than 200wkw with the likes of a VF36/37, all comes down to how well it deals with the stupidly high compression ratio.

The stock VF45’s can get 190-200wkw with the right supporting mods.

Still wish I hadn’t sold the Frankenturbo and had given it a go to see what it could do on a manual.

Thanks mate, this one's a single turbo - TA-BP5 chassis. Yip looking at getting a replacement in, looks like All Drive Subaroo in Oz have decent Cosworth rebuilt engines, looking at that option atm. Cheers

Wow ok, I might look at that option to do a decent conversion. Cheers

Seems like I have a VF38/TD04 turbo. Looking at getting a cosworth rebuilt engine from All Drive Subaroo in Oz. Cheers

Have you compared their prices to the likes of Possumbourne? Surely they can knock something similar together locally for a cheaper price

Yip thanks mate, just called them today and they quoted approx $5k to rebuild. Just waiting on a cosworth rebuilt engine quote from All Drive Subaroo in Australia too but $5k seems to be the ballpark figure. I would love to rebuild the engine myself but I just don't have the time, tools and know how to complete the job, got a quote for quality parts for $2350 to rebuild the engine so would just need someone to re-assemble the engine however I am not entirely sure how much damage has been done, potentially needs the crankshaft replaced too. Another option I am looking at is sourcing one from Japan and importing it in. Thanks for your help, much appreciated. Cheers

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
