BP5 turbo blown

Recommended Posts

My mate has a 2003 BP5 wagon (automatic) and has just blown his turbo.

He wants to replace with second hand turbo.

What turbo does these have and where should I go or what should I do to make sure its a good second hand turbo and he doesn't wanna spend too much $$$. Ill prolly install it for him coz I wanna do a turbo xD

Do Autos blow their turbos more often than manuals or is that BS?

Yep, in this particular case they do blow them more than manuals.

The pre facelift auto’s have VF38’s and the manuals have TD04HLA’s.

Blocked banjo filters is one of the big culprits for them failing which need to be checked, but the 38’s are just renowned for crapping the bed even when reasonably well looked after.

Look to find a VF44, VF45 (both on facelift GT/GT Spec B’s in auto and manual) or the TD04HLA.

All three drop in but think the TD04 needs oil/coolant lines moved as it’s a MHI turbo rather than IHI

Whats the difference between the VF38 and 44-45? So they can just bolt in and its all good?

Journal bearing vs ball bearing. Plus they just seem to be a lot more reliable.

@Invisible changed to a VF45 a few years back so might have some first hand info on any potential trip ups.

Indeed I did, pretty much straight bolt in for me, I think I had to slightly cut the heat shield to fit, but basically bolt in.

One thing to note is that my car drove very differently after, I would get some silly boost spikes (not sure if turbo related or tune related?)

But I have now since done a couple other things (front mount, ebc etc.) and been tuned and run 223kwatw, but prior to front mount was doing something like 178kw

Have a long 14mm offset ringspanner helps.

Don't forget to do up the clamp on the oil drain before starting it.

Replace the copper washers or anneal them.

Oooh and if you want to be nice to the turbo pull the fuel pump fuse out and crank it over to prime the turbo with oil before starting it.

Should I drain oil and coolant? I would rather not do this but some people say do to it. Its not my car so dont wanna be mucking around with oil and coolant changes if possible.

Do I have to fully remove the downpipe or just unbolt from turbo? and oh S***... do I need gaskets?

@boon any idea what size copper washers I need for the banjo bolts?

My turbo swap I did I removed the DP as it made getting to the oil drain and some of the up pipe bolts easier to get to.

I didn't drain my oil or coolant. Didn't really lose any oil while doing it, but did lose loots of coolant before I plugged the coolant hose.

new gaskets would be best.

Wow, I took off his intercooler and found nothing but a bunch of oil (from stuffed turbo). I got some pics here but damn the engine must have taken a beating if its been munching on all this oil... Could it have done much damage or will it be fine? Its driven around 45-60min with stuffed turbo and drunk a couple liters of oil iirc.

Is this normal for buggered turbo and will it be all good once its fixed?

Thanks to @sobanoodle I have a VF45 to put on.

Inside intercooler:

elbow from turbo to intercooler.

Tipped up intercooler for 15 mins and this came out lol.

What does the throttle body and manifold look like? Much oil in there?

You could be safe and drain and check the oil for bits of turbo.

I'm no expert but I would be more worried about what's hiding in oil that could damage bearings.

Tip some petrol in the intercooler and give it a real good shake then pour it out. Gloopy oil like that, that has been mixing with water from the air, is quite tricky to remove.

Then give it a real good dose of brake clean or degreaser, shake it some more, call it good.

Lol repco wanted $220 for the turbo gasket kit where trademe has exact same kit for $165 so the guy called someone and then said nah its all sweet and he gave it to me for $160. Usually they must make a S*** ton of money if he can just drop off $60 no worries. Pays to do research online first aye..

Be aware that you could be comparing apples with oranges.

Although the gaskets may appear to be the same they may not be made to the same specs..

Im gonna replace turbo gaskets so any ideas for torque specs on all the banjo bolts and brackets on the turbo or a guide on how tight?

Uppipe and downpipe are apparently 26 ft-lbs according to nasioc but couldnt find others easily.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
