ECU Re-flash + Tune

Recommended Posts

Can anybody tell me their experience with an ECU Reflash + Tune on a Turbo Subaru, or even just an ECU reflash?

I've read and been told that a simple ECU reflash gives the car a few more horsies and makes it run more efficiently since Subaru factory tunes are quite meh..

Is this true? I drive an 07 Impreza S-GT and thought this could be a nice option for the car, the only issue is I have no idea where to get it done and how much it costs roughly (Invercargill)

Sorry if i'm not using the right term by 'Reflash', just trying to fill my head with knowledge :D

Hey mate,

A ECU reflash is a great way to unlock a bit more potential from the car especially if you have bolt on mods like an exhaust. I also found it a great way to know that my car was running how it should be.

Prices range from 800 - 1400 depending on the shop and then touch up tunes once you have extra parts can be done easily.

Aw S*** I did not expect it to be that expensive

I think the price is worth it, probably best bang for buck you can do. save up and get a reflash as RaKid mentioned it feels like a totally different car after you get it. more power better fuel consumption and the added relief knowing your car is running well.

if you were in auckland then i could have helped out with this as well..

but yea man the reflash is a good way to customize the tune to your set of mods so its safe and makes the best power it can safely

My understanding of my car is that the only 'mods' are a middle res delete to a muffler and equal length headers. I have no idea if the BOV is factory. What a shame I hardly know my car that well hahah. But either way, it's fairly untouched.

Alternatively get an e-tune for typically under $500. No real risk for a stock car. Not a fan of going that way with big power builds

Can you please explain to me what e-tune is?

The crap part about living down here is the lack of places to have cars modified and tuned. Most people I know have had to travel to chch or dunedin to see some kind of specialist.

e-tune is a ticking time bomb in my opinion - you would be better to go see a specialist

especially with the knocky sgt tune from factory

e-tune is when someone sends you files to upload and u send them logs

the issue is that if a serious knock happens while pushing the map then you have no protection till the new map arrives plus you could blow things up even while logging it..

just my 2c

As @Pappu1 mentioned things can go bad quickly with a horrible tune. My car when I brought it had a second hand motor put in out of a great car. tuned by someone in palmerston north and needed a rebuilt within a couple of hundred kms.

Save up and make a weekend of it kill two birds with one stone and drive to a location drop the car off and spend some time chilling while the car gets tuned :) I did this with my car when I got it trailered it 6 hours away and took 3 days off work to relax while I was up there.

Definitely right on all points but a decent one will push things slowly. You’d have to try pretty hard to produce a more knocky tune than the stock one

Guess I better get saving If I want a tune then. Here's me over here thinking ehh, computer plugged to ECU with a quick flash.. must only be like 200?? HAH couldn't have been more wrong. Gotta learn this stuff though :D

Given you're in Invers with no 98, I'd totally be saving up for the mods you want to do (e.g. exhaust) and then get the car re-flashed for 95.. You'll net more power, bit more economy and an ECU that is happily not retarding timing due to the lower quality petrol :)

Very good point here. Say If I did have this tune for 95 and was somewhere at had 98 fuel, say Dunedin, would it be fine to stick 98 in anyway? Since I like the engine cleaning properties 98 fuel has.

Don't quote me on this, but I've had my car re-tuned for 98 and my tuner said I could happily run 95 as the ECU still retained its knock correction, so I'd say it would be the same case for your car, it would just advance timing within it's limits.

If you could afford the trip to Chch, I'd highly highly recommend @SAS for your tuning. In fact, give them a message on Facebook and/or @gotasuby. They'll be more than happy to help.

I'd be very happy to discuss with them :D Plus a trip to Christchurch wouldn't hurt at all. Gotta get away every now then again, right?

I personally use Apet in Dunedin, never had any issues, quite a few of the rally guys use him too.
He owns a turbo legacy himself, and I've known of him to flash quite a few of them!
Has an in-house AWD dyno too.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
