Non-permanent 12V feed from ceiling map light

3 posts in this topic

Hi

I'm trying to hard-wire a radar detector in. I'll be selling the car within a few months, so don't want to tap into the fuseboard and the hassle of running the cable from there up and under the head-liner, so figured (after some googling) that the best solution was to tap into the 12V present around the map lights, just aft of the rear view mirror. The problem is : I can only find a permanently on 12V feed up there. I need one that goes off when the ignition is turned off, otherwise the radar will drain the battery.

Any hints? Maybe there's not one up there?? I had a good prod around with the multimeter, with the negative probe earthed on a bolt hole in the ceiling - is that what I'm doing wrong?

Matt

If you can get to the back of your stereo, there's acc power there, yellow wire if i remember right, red is permanent on. The reason I think there's always power at the map lights is that its the negative that's switched, someone will be able to confirm.

Yea those map lights are super weird. Has some kind of negative dimming module for it.

Easier to steal it from the fuse box than dig behind the stereo. Get one of those side tap fuse holders and pull your side vent, A piller and map light out and you’ll pull a wire through there in a few mins.
