Rookie engine building mistakes.

Back in the day,before the internet.Decided to put a bigger cam in my Mini.Problem was the only way I could figure out how to remove the cam chain was to remove the clip that holds the chain together.While racing my mates Escort over the Bombay’s,chain let go.Replaced single chain with duplex chain and and installed properly.

 

Or later on when I replaced the short block in my Escort Sport and didn’t replace the spigot bearing.Put it all back together and couldn’t change gears.Engine in and out and back in over a evening.

I think I get the idea of this thread - Comment your dur dur engine building or other mod moments for others entertainment and mutual facepalmage 

 

• When I was 17 I was rebuilding my MY05 KXF250 - put it all back together and didn't torque the cam journals to spec, just tightened them up real good. Started it and the Cams picked up and seized within the first 10 seconds of it running. lesson learnt! 
• Tried filling and painting a massive stone chip on my bonnet once, ended up getting the whole front of the car painted... I hate painting

Never built an engine however rookie mistakes when I was about 16 - 17 I had a vtec prelude (ow lord) and replacing a front caliper, obviously forgot to tighten the top bolt and was driving to hawkes bay when it flew out the side and caliper had flopped against the wheel and was just grinding 

 

Also when I first painted a car I used a very heavy metallic grey and did not do a ' technique coat ' when you pretty much mist over the car to keep it all similar. rolled car into the sun and it looked like a fricken zebra with stripy metallic.

thought the Alternator was the starter once (young & 1st car) pluged it in through the fan & 'tested' it.... didnt wreck anything!

If you own a new Mercedes with the 48V mild hybrid system (only new 4 cylinders or the new Inline 6s), that's actually true. No front pulley system too.
