Intercooler Water Spray - Auto Button Trigger?

8e4r

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows what is required for the 'Auto' button intercooler water spray to trigger? A few Subaru forums point to the ECU controlling this (unconfirmed). Does anyone have more info on how this works and under what circumstances (e.g. from x PSI boot & y intake temperature etc.)?

Specifically after info on how this works on the GCs, as it may be different on the GDs and newer.

Cheers.

the ecu controls it

it can use a few inputs like rpm, temp, boost, speed etc and then based on conditions it will spray

the sprayer can be tuned to suit

usually if im doing a reflash on stock top mount, i will make it have more aggressiveness the spray

unsure on the GC8 parameters but thats what the GDB has above

Thanks! I'll have a chat with the guys at PBMS when I get the car tuned.

Fairly sure the GC auto spray was pretty basic, something like based on throttle position (which is pretty useless imo).

If you're getting it tuned on a link or the likes, you could hook the sprayer control to an ecu output and have the ecu control it based on just about anything.

I would have thought air intake temp and speed would be a good place to start?

the older pre v5 GC were more basic

i think in the v5/6 GC they added a few more smarts

the GD got a lot more smarter and better

the GR onwards went back to being pathetic with no spray except for the single spec c version .. what a pity they missed the spray on the GR/GV models...

older  &quite neat write up on these ( and a DIY kit to build your own)

Summary of Conventional Intercooler Water Spray Control Approaches

Control Technique

Advantages

Disadvantages

Boost Pressure Switch

  • Simple, cheap
  • Relatively late switch on
  • Switches off on gear changes, even when driving hard
  • Switches off on trailing throttle, even when driving hard
  • Operates even when intercooler is cold
  • May be on continuously during high speed cruise
  • Wasteful of water

Throttle Position Switch

  • Simple, cheap
  • Early switch-on
  • Switches off on gear changes, even when driving hard
  • Switches off on trailing throttle, even when driving hard
  • Operates even when intercooler is cold
  • Wasteful of water

Intake Air Temperature Switch

  • Operates only with high intake air temps
  • Will continue to operate during gear changes and on trailing throttle
  • Simple, cheap
  • In urban driving can be on continuously due to radiator heat soak, lack of engine airflow
  • Very wasteful of water

Boost or Throttle Position switch plus series Temperature Switch

  • Operates only with high intake air temps
  • Can have early switch on
  • Switches off on gear changes, even when driving hard
  • Switches off on trailing throttle, even when driving hard
  • Depending on system dynamics, can be wasteful of water

I stumbled on this too during my Google searches, nice read!

Will update this topic if I find any concrete information, cheers for the responses everyone.

i have done the following in the past :

set a boost switch to a timer circuit.

that way the spay continues a few seconds after the boost event (gear change)

set the boost switch to low trip (say a few psi)

in an additional step, you can add a temp switch that only allows circuit activation on higher intake temps (saves on some water)

but the initial setup (despite being hard on water use) is good for a all round spray setup that works well

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
