Radar Detectors 2019

Recommended Posts

As per title - what do you fellas recommend for a radar detector?

I'm stuck between the three kinda obvious ones -

- Uniden R3NZ

- Escort Redline EX

- Escort MAX 360C

Price isn't a worry to me, just which any of you fellas would recommend. Also where is the best place to get one?

Also, if someone wants to recommend me one for a motorbike, would be appreciated too 😂

I use and Escort Passport 9500ix. It's pretty good, but I've been driving past heaps of cops lately without the ka band going off. Not sure if they don't have their radar on or if they have new radar that can't be detected.

It picks up laser pretty well too.

Check out vortex radar for the details reviews. R3nz is kinda best overall at the moment but be aware that r7 is coming out end April and will have better range in redflex (the speed vans)

i use waze right now and has saved me multitude of times. Am Not a hoon by any means but I do what’s necessary in passing lanes and quite often there are revenue gatherers waiting there (how is that making no safer??? Would rather they catch speeders where public safety is on the line) , so this kinda thing is big motivator for me to get RD . Plan to use both waze and rd when I get the r7

for a few years i was using the valentine one + bt module + yav1 phone app.

it performed well but was getting to be a pain in the ass to use.

last year i switched to the uniden r3.

it is a superb performer, that's also easy to setup and use.

currently the best windscreen mount detector sold in nz, with maybe the radenso pro m.

a big bonus is that uniden have finally made software updates readily available to users.

as mentioned above, the uniden r7 will be out in april.

big bonus is valentine style arrows updated for the 21st century.

it will be more expensive than the r3 (currently $899nzd/399usd), us rrp will be $599. nz  ???

lots of good info at vortex radar

Cheers for the input fellas!

Definitely gonna be going the Uniden R7, as I'll be putting this in the new Mazda. Probably gonna get it later in April. So I can wait for the R7NZ to come out :).

Plan on doing quite a bit of road trips with it, so wanting a RD for when on the road for the Highway Patrol cops that prowl around.

I should be able to use Waze with the Mazda's infotainment system hopefully - if not I'll just get the upgrade you can get for them.

These are pretty good to avoid speeding tickets

Especially considering the speedo in my S401 is basically dead accurate (1-2km/h read error at 110km/h) hahaha

My dad has the STI and another of the beltronics and those have been very good over the years, I’m out of the loop now though

are any of these new ones undetectable by the police radar detector detectors?

radar detectors are legal in NZ so not a big deal, but yeah many of the new ones are undetectable. laser jammers are illegal if you have that, it'll be something youw anna keep low key.

This ^^

No question the Uniden R7 is the top of the heap with a range 500m more than anything else.

But the main advantage is directional capability, which I really miss having switched from a 24 year old V1 to an R3NZ.

The R3 is great though and will be significantly cheaper than the R7, and thus in second place.

Here's my clip on the R3:

Have any of you tried the hidden/discreet options out there?

They are a big step up in price but never been a fan of crap stuck to the widscreen. Especially the hassle of always having to put it away to prevent one of the locals helping themselves.

Performance is king and that means higher on the vehicle... yes its a pain, but not a biggie. The R3 unclips in a fraction of a second.....

I'm still running an ancient Bel RX75 (permanent install detector). We did some heads-up testing with it against a Bel STI Driver and a V1 and the performance was comparable. Admittedly I haven't looked into detectors in years and for all I know the latest crop are miles better (literally).

I probably wouldn't go back to a non-hardwire one. I really like not having to dick about with anything every time I hop in the car.

newer detectors have improved sensitivity for nasty radars like the new redflex cameras (mobile and fixed) and improved filtering for blocking non-police radar like car anti-collison systems etc.

gps equipped detectors should have been updated with the latest fixed camera positions.

my car gps has the old positions for fixed cameras - as do gps escorts - updated maps plus retain old positions - a pia !

i've just updated my uniden r3 with the latest gps map -  palmy has  a new redflex fixed camera a few km's south of longburn on sh56.

the r3 gps gave me a good 10sec or so voice warning before the detector went off.

hardwired is good if you stick to one car, gets expensive of you fit out several cars with hardwired/hidden detectors.

portability is a bonus if you switch between cars.

😉

uniden r1/r3 /r3 are detector detector proof.

irrelevant in nz as detectors are legal and local cops don't use detector detectors.

just tested my r3 against the local fixed redflex polecam.

results were excellent !

in clear/slightly overcast conditions i got ~300m gps voice warning and ~200m radar alert in both directions.

superb results as these things are on tall, skinny poles that are easily missed by eye until too late.

why does your friend want a bel sti xr ?

they are old, old, old

wait a few months and you''ll see a flux of r3 as owners upgrade 😉

Will be interesting to see if they mirror the R7's design for right-hand drive markets.

Having a display aimed at the passenger seat is kinda pointless :/

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
