  1. Just block off the the black vacuum lines running to the waste gate actuators (not sure if the `96 has one on each turbo, think it might only have one on the passengers side turbo) Then you will have all the boost you could ever want On a serious note the cheapest and easiest way is to install a boost tap on the waste gate vacuum line. But TBH it is one of the quickest and dirtiest ways of shagging your car, especially if not done with complimentary modes to increase air flow, fuel delivery and exhaust flow.
  2. Ahh, that makes sense. Where would one of those rascals hide?
  3. Has anyone done this. Boostin advised a while ago that to change the cluster also required changing the ecu, bcu and potentially the keys. Has anyone tried the change and confirmed what parts are required? Also what is the bcu?? Boost control? Would an H6 have that? sorry not up to speed with that acronym. Cheers in advance.
  4. The only way I found to sort the jap nav unit was to import an english one from an aussie wrecker. Never actually ended up doing it myself, but they are the same units so would plug straight in.
  5. To be fair to Leighton (thanks for the spelling tip) was really helpful until just before windscreen was installed. I think what may of happened is he thought he was getting a black one when ordered from Japan, but a green one turned up and, either, he may not have been able to send it back, or the windscreen guy installed it and he hadn't checked to make sure it was black. It went all wrong when I picked up the car and pointed out it was green and not black. Either way it is in their court now, so it will be interesting to see how they handle the situation from here. I just want to have a decent number of photos showing the black strip if questioned again about what "factory" is.
  6. Been talking to AMI today and it just gets better and better. Turns out Armstrong was paid $1,755 for the windscreen. A windscreen exactly the same as the Smith and Smith one that would've cost ~$400. Needless to say AMI are now as pissed as I am and have taken the situation in hand. I'm not usually one to publicly shame a company, but what Armstrong (or one of their employees at least) have done here is pretty rotten.
  7. I think his name was Laten. I agree, and quiet possible if it was a factory option. But the annoying thing is I went there to get a black one, I told him I wanted a black one, told him I could get a green one and didn't want it and told him if he couldn't get a black one I would just get a second hand one. The windscreen cost over $1000 and the entire reason for that was to get the correct (black) windscreen. I had to make several calls to the insurance company to force them to pay for the correct one. Then he just goes and installs a green one which I could've had a month ago for quarter the price. Extremely average really, and I normally get really good service there.
  8. Cheers, that's exactly what mine looked like. I'm sure it's a factory thing, can't imagine changing it out just to get the tints to match. And if it was an aftermarket thing why can't smith and smith just get one of those.
  9. Hey all, Currently I have a 2002 GTB Legacy (Etune if that counts for anything). It has factory tints on all the back windows and had a black tint strip across the top of the windscreen. A couple of months ago a truck travelling in the opposite direction flicked up a stone and cracked the windscreen. Went through my insurance who sent me to Smith and Smith. They could only source one with a see-through green tint strip. Not wanting to except that I went to Armstong (Chch Subaru dealership), told them the story and they said no problems we can get the correct (black) windscreen for it but it has to come from Japan. I said wouldn't it be easier to just get a second hand one? But it seems as the insurance company was paying for it the new one from Japan made them more money. Couple of weeks past and I got the call to bring my car in. Took it in and they installed a windscreen with a green tint strip . Talked to the previously helpful guy who is now saying the black tint strip was an aftermarket windscreen and Legacy's never left the factory like that. When I questioned that he said "Do you know more about Subaru's than me" So it would be really helpful, if you own a BH Legacy with a black tint strip, if you could take a photo of the tint strip and post it up here. I've got a couple from trade me, but ideally I'd like to get a few close up of different cars to basically prove him wrong. It seems the black tint strip must have been a factory option as it is a bit hit and miss whether a Legacy has a black strip or a green one. I know it seems pedantic but the green strip just doesn't look right. Cheers in advance.
  10. I was meaning more like every 5000k's rather than the lack of servicing that leads to this problem.
  11. Most Mitsi dealerships sell it over the counter funnily enough. Or google it and buy it over the net. Once you clean the motor with mbl8 be sure to service it regularly with good quality oil to stop them gumming up again.
  12. Forgeting about the up front cost of these 6 figure vehicles though. And what they will cost to repair when the k's get up. Besides most of the euo ones are basically oversized cars anyway. I'm thinking more the prados, big horns surfs, muss. The mid 90's vehicles that are basically small trucks.
  13. I always thought people got into trouble taking emergency action at 100 kph. Turn to avoid, over correct......flip.
  14. No offence intended at all, but IMO you are exactly the type of person we need to encourage into lighter less dangerous vehicles. I'm not talking about damage to roads, but damage to anything they come into contact with during an accident. Not just the weight either but the higher bumpers that miss things like side intrusion bars in a normal car. Physics is physics and you can't argue with Newtons third law. The greater the mass, the greater the force required to move it and therefore the greater the force required to stop it. There are plenty of other options for the points you raise. There are numerous 7 seater station wagons if extra space is needed. As for Mt Hutt, I've done about 40 days so far this season, and have done over that for at least the last 4 seasons. All in Subarus, Either GTBs or WRXs. I agree the WRX seats need to go down to fit boards, but I can fit three boards, a pair of skis, all the boots and gear and 4 adults in my GTB with the seats up. And no less room than my mates LandCruiser. (But a lot smoother and much easier to drive up the hill) I've never hit a rock and never had a break down, but I've seen dozens of over heated SUV's and many that have had a blow out hitting a rock between the treads. Fact is I don't think you need to worry for a long time yet, as at this point my opinion is the minority. But I think as time goes on and petrol and carbon emissions become more expensive large SUV/4wd type vehicles will become a thing of the past, at least in the cities.
  15. Funny how wrong they are about this. Especially given the price of diesel these days, add on road user charges and they become almost equivalent. Then just sit back and wait until fuel pump packs a sad, glow plugs stop working and the injectors block up. All the time lugging around a 2.5 ton lard arse, there's just no comparison to a good quality station wagon.
  16. Why do you need it to go faster than the 100 kph open road speed limit anyway? To do so is breaking the law
  17. Don't know about that. The latest Subaru Outback has a kerb weight of 1535kg compared with about 2300kg for the latest Prado. Plus the higher centre of gravity doesn't help. I don't think they should be banned, there are some people that have a genuine need for one. But people who buy one for the higher driving position or to drive up the ski field access road should be actively encouraged to buy a normal car....Or even better a Subaru The biggest worry is most people don't understand the unique handling characteristics of these vehicles. And therefore are endangering everyone around them. But they feel safer so who cares if they kill the person they hit.
  18. And our piss poor road design does nothing to help the situation. You will always get people doing stupid things or making genuine mistakes but there is not contingency in our road design. We aren't robots, no matter what the country does with enforcement or driver training people will break rules and/or make mistakes. If you make a decent mistake at 100 kph on a new zealand road you will probably be toast, either hitting opposing traffic, a tree or power pole. I understand the legal implications but I always think how easy it would be to move power poles away from the side of our open roads into the wide open grass land that usually bounds them. One practically simple change that would save many lives no matter the reason for them skidding down the shoulder.
  19. Surely we are going to read of his death any time now. He just doesn't seem to have any regard for his own well being, and is bloody awesome at anything he touches.
  20. I think registration should have a component attached to the weight of a vehicle. Something like $0 added cost to drive something light, and therefore fuel efficient and safer, like a nissan micra and up to $2000 to drive something heavy like a Hummer. It would have two fold benefits; less fuel consumption and, over time and on average, less severe accidents. As there are two variables to the severity (or energy) of every accident; velocity and mass. Although the way the transport ministry propagates it, speed is the only one we need concern ourselves with. Maybe they are the ones that should re-attend fifth form physics rather than patronise us all with factually correct, but extremely misleading adverts.
  21. I couldn't agree more. Something needs to be done to start reducing the weight of everyday vehicles on our roads.
  22. When I got my first GTB, (many years ago, the silver one in my sig) I dropped it back to third and passed a bunch of cars on a long straight. Went to the end of third, changed to fourth, then through fourth and changed to fifth. The next thing the motor just cut out. I thought I had blown it up, but it had just hit the speed limiter. Didn't even fell like I was going that fast and all happened in a flash. Moral of the story.....keep an eye on the speedo when overtaking in a GTB as you can't just go as fast as you can any more (My previous car would struggle to top 120 in the same situation)
  23. Don't really agree with giving anyone with $25 carte blanche over speed. But I disagree with the adverts saying 60 in a 50 or 120 in 100 will be the difference between life and death. If that were the case why not measure the stopping ability of the poorest performing vehicle legally aloud on NZ roads and then calculate maximum open road speed limits for each vehicle given that stopping distance.
