  1. Cost me about NZ$35 so you can have it for that. If you are interested I can stick it up on Trademe. cheers Richard
  2. I've got a spare cc pad (new, unused) if you still need one soobanoodle. Good news jono!
  3. Some now even ask you what value to put for customs purposes!! Parsouq offer cheap and fast delivery. I have only ordered once but would do again.
  4. I did unplug the wires and the radio worked just fine so clearly they don't do anything important. Still got the Japanese welcome though.
  5. Some progress. Those three wires go directly to an unused white plug under the steering column where they are spliced into other wires which appear to head for the steering wheel. Next step is to follow where they go. I did try pressing the buttons to see if there was a resistance change at the radio end but alas no so maybe they are not connected to the audio switches at all.
  6. Thanks Sobanoodle. I think DIY brain surgery would be easier. Those links were some help but don't quite get me there. I am going to have to pull it all out again to see what those highlighted wires do. Might even be a way to disable that annoying Japanese greeting which would be a bonus! I think I can use a multimeter to see if resistance changes when buttons pressed. Just can't seem to find complete information on what each of those connectors is for. But violet/white seems to be a standard steering wheel control colour...
  7. Phew, panic over! Had visions of a screwdriver left down the back causing mayhem... Yeah, just took off the negative. Always do just in case. New battery tomorrow.
  8. Thanks, on charge now. Seems to be taking charge at least!
  9. I had the battery disconnected to poke around the audio and now the car won't start. It had a kinda slow turnover first try but now just get rapid clicking and flashing of lights on dash! Is it just a flat battery or something more sinister? New car (to me), wife not happy and blood pressure through the roof! 2010 Exiga
  10. Seems you are almost there if cruise buttons are recognised at the ecu and you have the 4 pin plug for brake/stop switch. Just wonder if cc cars have a different clutch switch too. Might be worth a Google. I am surprised the dash light doesn't work though. Good luck, took me a while to get mine going...
  11. This is the adapter. Seems to be labelled with white tags. Any idea what the steering wheel inputs wouldf be labelled? Descriptions are not obvious to me' cheers Rich
  12. Can you help? I have this Jap navi/stereo in my car I added the audio buttons to the steering wheel. You guessed it, buttons don't work. I did some Googling but all the plugs seem different! I was expecting a white 20 pin plug into the HU but seem to have 13 (14 with one pin missing)with something which looks like an adapter to a black plug which goes into the HU. Since there are two wires for the steering wheel controls and all the pins are wired-up I assume there is an electrical link to the buttons but the HU isn't responding to the signal but really don't understand any of this stuff. Any ideas?!
  13. Thanks Ross. Didn\'t your\'s have a 4 pin anyway? I think some cars have the 4 pin even though CC not fitted. Hardly seems worth the trouble of having different looms and switches but that\'s marketing I suppose! I did notice when researching Freessm that a car appeared not to have CC activated though maybe it gets loaded when you install the buttons? Something happens then though might just be a reboot after battery disconnected?
  14. Final step is the reconnect the battery. Some kind of intall/reboot occurs which takes about 30 seconds - don\'t touch anything unless you understand Japanese! Now you can go for a drive and enjoy cruise control! If you get an ABS/traction control warning (like I did) it will disable cruise. I think this was because I didn\'t allow enough brake lever travel. I adjusted the bolts a few turns and the problem has not happened again. If you have problems FreeSSM has a helpful cruise control diagnostic. That\'s how I belatedly realised I needed a different brake switch. That\'s it. Hopefully this will help someone. Would be good if others who have tried this let us know which models/years worked or otherwise. cheers Richard
  15. Step 2. Now you fit the 4 pin brake/stop light switch. Sometimes the 4 pin switch is already installed so you can skip this step. Here\'s mine before the swap: The plug for the 4-pin was already wired into the loom and taped out of the way: Simply unplug and unbolt the 2 pin and replace with the 4 pin switch. Be careful that the bolts are tight and the brake travel is the same. If your car is a manual you may also have to also fit a clutch switch (not sure about this though as it may have another function not connected to cruise control in which case it will already be there)
  16. Step1 is to buy and fit the CC buttons. The same "pad" is used on various models but there seems to be different plugs used. Mine has a socket for 8 wires so I bought a pad with an 8 pin plug which came off a 2012 Impreza. It cost me about $35 delivered from Israel! Others might have 10 or 12. To fit the buttons you must remove the steering wheel which is not difficult but don\'t forget to disconnect the battery and allow time for all current to discharge! Detailed instructions are here: The buttons plug in here. This is the old plug with just the horn wire attached. You will have to remove the steering wheel to remove the blank plate and bolt on the pad. Removing the airbag was really simple on my car but I think some other (older?) models have clips which can be tricky. Buttons are in:
  17. OK then, I will write up here! I think this would work on any car with an electronic throttle (all Subarus since about 2004?) So, my 2010 Exiga (CVT version) didn\'t have cruise control and Subaru plus a few sparkies told me it was too hard to retrofit. Subaru even very kindly contacted the head office in Japan for me. But this wasn\'t the answer I wanted so I got hold of the workshop manual for a 2010 Legacy/Outback from the net (together with a couple of viruses!) These two pages were encouraging: Two bits were missing from my car. The CC buttons and the brake switch. It took me a while to realise the brake switch is not the same as the stoplight switch. The brake switch only has a use for CC and is combined with the stop light switch. The way to tell the difference is by looking at the number of pins (2 or 4). Here\'s the original 2 pin which I replaced: Wife\'s calling for dinner, to be continued...
  18. Yeah, it was a good feeling! Sure, will do write-up. Might be best to start a new thread. This one wanders a bit and really it is a very simple job.
  19. Wingers wanted $167 plus GST. Anyway, in the end I found one at Strongs for $40 plus GST. And, Eureka, I now have working cruise control! Many thanks for the help here, especially Ross, would not have got to this point without you. Subaru and various auto electricians said it was not possible without major wiring, hardware and software changes. But in reality it cost me $80 in parts and no wiring changes. There was a heart stopping moment on the first test run when I touched the brakes and the ABS and stabillity control error lights came on but this was fixed (I think) by adjusting the brake pedal travel on the new switch which was dragging a bit. All works fine now, really smooth with the CVT. Now for my trusty \'97 Impreza. cheers Richard
  20. oem $195 plus GST at the wreckers... Getting this one instead. $37 delivered
  21. Had a quick look again. There is a spare 4 pin connector taped to the loom where the stop light switch wires exit. It has four wires. Two are the same colours as the 2 pin stop switch connector and the other two are the same colour and position as indicated in the cruise control wiring diagram for a 2010 Legacy. Maybe I just need to replace with a four pin brake/stop light switch and hook up this connector instead? Could this damage my ECU?!! Could I check connection to ECU another way? Here\'s a pic of the unused connector whioch has enough wire to reach the brake switch: Using FreeSSm whilst driving confirms there is a brake switch error (permanently "ON") but not a stop light problem.
  22. I got lucky as the buttons came with the correct 8 pin connector (some have 10 or 12) and seem to be in the right locations. I think one wire is horn and two are for lighting up the buttons. The other 3 are for the CC.
  23. Thanks Ross, that\'s helpful, I will have to spend some more time upside-down in the drivers seat! Suspect the wiring is not there and in the absence of confirmation that the brake is not on the CC system is disabled. Would be nice if I could see a couple of extra wires tucked away.
  24. OK, figured out the wiring and the OBD II cable arrived. I got the engine diagnostic going but not the transmission diagnostic. Seems cruise control is there ("Integrated Cruise Control" has a green tick and Cruise Control status is "ON"). Also the ECU gets a correct signal from each of the cruise control buttons when I press them. I am getting a signal from the Stop light switch but Brake switch is permanently "ON" so maybe I have the wrong brake switch (mine has 2 wires) or it is not wired to the ECU. Did have a few software issues so will try again on the road.
