Picked up a Sump Guard for the Forester, with some help from @Kiwi_Fozzeremoved a snapped bolt that was in the way... only to find that it had been cross threaded to hell by the previous owner...
Now to grab a thread repair kit...

Finally fitted this! Thanks to more help from @Kiwi_Fozze

Also picked myself up recovery boards, compressor, and a few other pieces from SCA.
And the Forester is booked in for 5x Yokohama Geolander G015 ATs on Friday!

  2. Pretty common issue with the power steering pumps on the Flat 6 Subarus.

The power steering pump will just need a rebuild with a new seal kit. Most Subaru specialists will be familiar with the issue.

How does one of those compare to a similar priced earlier gen R? I feel like i’d always want the R for the all wheel drive even if it's a more front biased setup compared to Subaru’s

Yeah I did look at the Mk6 R but I went for this as it's a huge step up with the mod cons and comfort for everyday driving. The Mk6 R still has cambelt which I wanted to avoid too. And the Mk7 R was a good $10k or so more than this. Might upgrade to the R at some point but this was what ticked my boxes and fit the budget.

I've yet to drive this properly... (Thanks Covid) but round town it's comfy and quick. Definitely a change from a heavy AWD Legacy.
And having the special active front diff is meant to make a huge difference over the standard GTI.

  4. I've never owned a 4th gen but have driven a few.

5th gen definitely feel heavier and seem more comfort than sport orientated.

More space inside, with much more legroom for the rear passengers. My 3.6R has over 230,000km now with no major faults in my ownership *touch wood*.

That being said, they're a great car for the money; comfortable, great factory audio, well optioned.

And they can still be driven in a spirited manner, just opt for grippy tires and "sporty" brake pads.

  5. So the tensioner assembly arrived from Rock Auto.

Managed to fight the car to remove the old one without having to remove the power steering pump.

Glad I opted to order the whole assembly rather than just the pulley, as it turns out the assembly was damaged.

Then it was another battle to try and fit the new assembly without being able to see the bolt holes. Universal joints came in handy here.

Once back together, belt on and bleeding the coolant system tomorrow night.

  6. Returned back to Auckland after a South Island road trip including FlatNats with a few other CS members.

Heading North from Akaroa I noticed my rad fans running loudly whilst sitting still. Was a hot day (29°C) and had just had a spirted drive over the Akaroa hills so didn't think much of it.

No temp gauge in the car meant I relied on Cold/Hot temp warning lights.

After taking it easy for a while I and still hearing the fans I became a tad more concerned. Plugged in my trusty OBD2 Bluetooth adapter and ran Torque... coolant temp was sitting between 102-108°C. Stopped in Kaikoura and checked coolant... overflow was empty. After topping up temps returned to a more comfortable 84-90°C.

@Firenza grabbed a radiator cap for me in Wellington and checked everything in Palmy this morning... rad cap was busted. New cap on and happy days.

For those with newer Subarus that lack a proper temp gauge, I highly recommend grabbing a cheap OBD2 Bluetooth adapter so you can quickly check temps etc.
