  1. Trevor Crowe built one for Targa, only his one is mid engined, i'm not sure if he retained 4wd/awd somehow or not.
  2. Thanks for the tips, It seems to be related to engine load, ie is not there when cruising light throttle, but as soon as you roll into throttle its there, going to have an other look this weekend so i'll pay it a bit more attention. No Aftermarket anything, it's stock standard, but still a valid point to look for leaks. [quote name='Stoffa said: Take it to Maclennans and pay them to check it out! It'll save you money in the long run. Dont trust a AA or VTNZ report, they're pretty rough in welli I may yet do similar, not sure if it will be maclennans though i will never bother with an AA or vtnz check again, after the last check i had done.
  3. Hi all, I'm currently looking at buying a 20K for the missus, auto unfortunately, so far i have only managed to find one locally to test drive, and it was all in all fairly good, however there was a noise that seemed to be related to the turbo. The noise is hard to describe, i wouldn't equate it to being a 'normal' turbo whine or whistle, it was more like the diff whine you expect in a baggy old dunnydore or similar, but seemed to have more relation to the engine speed and load than to the actual road speed of the car, hence why i'm thinking it could be turbo.. Are there any known weakness to look out for with the turbo's on these? It is possible that what i heard was related to the transmission, again not being familiar with the cars i don't know of any inherent issues myself, but from google research it sounds like they are naturally a noisy transmission in comparison to other manufacturers. Any input much appreciated. Cheers.
  4. Technically you will need a cert though i doubt anyone would pull you up on it. As far as lvvta is concerned changing the aspiration method (carb to injected) needs to be certed.
  5. LOLOn a more serious note, ej18 is a pretty weak motor, ok it may be better than a stock high mileage ea81, but for the cost and effort of swapping it the advantages are really not worth it.
  6. One was made for me, but no one else was keen to leap in as well. I still have the drawings and jig if you want me to make you one.
  7. Theres a fwd ea71 leone, and a 4wd ea82t leone wagon, 5 speed D/R. I'm dead keen on the gearbox of the waon, but alas i can't afford at the moment. Also theres a pair of heads in the back of the wagon, they look to be in reasonable nick.

  9. I'm running an ej20 out of an hx20 with carb and dizzy from early legacy ej18, was going to go for an ej22 with the same carb adn dizzy, but all then ones i found were really high mileage, adn besides from what i read the motor i have is the same output as an ej22, although i doubt it will make anywhere the factory figures the way i am going to run it. In time i hope to run twin IDF's, at the moment i'm just keen to get the motor running and driving. [quote name='boostcut said: to get the placement of the dowels, get a snug fitting bolt and cut it down, then sharpen the end and bolt up to motor.. then hit the plate with a hammer and then then you will have a sweet as accurate dot to drill. Cheers for the advice, ive got couple of pin punches that have been altered in a similar manner, finding the dowel location is easy when you have the motor and gearbox, it's just that i can't pre-drill or ream them for others as the motors are all slightly different in their placement.
  10. Right so a slight change in plan, after measuring a few ej's and ea's it seems that the dowel placement is not identical from one engine to another, thus i can't accurately ream the dowel holes. I will supply the plates with pilot holes for the top bolts, and the 'ears' tapped to m8 for the ea style pitch stopper, the rod will need to be shortened. Price will be $190, if people decide that they want the top holes drilled or tapped i can do that. I should be fitting it up to my motor this weekend, will post some more pictures when it is done.
  11. As promised a picture of the first one. And sitting on the EA flywheel housing. I will be making a couple of tweaks if i do more, i need to make up a jig to accurately find the dowel location for both the ea gearbox and the ej motor. Does anyone know if the ej and ea gearboxes have the same size input shaft? For that matter does anyone have a worn out friction plate for either box? Will help with making an accurate jig for the dowel drilling.
  12. Picked up the first one today, basically will do them in small batches. The cutting is the easy bit, i need to set up a jig to drill the top mount holes and the dowel holes. Will post some pictures tomorrow of the first trial fit. Cheers, Dan
  13. Right so, i am picking the first adapter up tomorrow (hopefully) so will see how it works out, if people want them i can do them for $190 + shipping, this will get you a laser cut plate with pilot holes drilled for the dowels, and either pilot holes, or tapped for m10 for bolts or studs at the top. Will confirm the quality and post some pics when i have the first one, and if there are a few people keen will organise the manufacture of more. Cheers, Dan
  14. Some poogoat mags, 3 from 1 guy and a single from another. I'd so hit these up if they were more local. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Wheels-tyres/Alloy-wheels/auction-275717466.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Car-parts-accessories/Wheels-tyres/Alloy-wheels/auction-275472914.htm
  15. Theoretically it will work the other way as well, but you might have to clearance around the starter motor, i think the ej type gearbox mounts the starter further out from the centreline of the gearbox, also the flywheel or clutch may be in the wrong plane and might need spacing one way or t'other. But from a purely 'will it bolt together' angle, i see no reason why not.
  16. Hi mate, just worked out why the extra thickness, i'd lay dollars to donuts that the conversion using that setup was using an adapter plate to match the bolt holes in the ea flywheel with those in the ej crank. I will be redrilling my flywheel to the correct pattern, probably with a mill and rotary table, or i'll make a jig up to use a rotabroach to cut the new holes. cheers.
  17. All the commercially available ones i have seen are 12mm thick in either steel or alloy. I have an aversion to using alloy for the simple fact that the 2 top bolts are very close together, and my plan is to thread the plate and screw a stud from each side into the plate so the plate is securely fastened to both the gearbox and the engine, and i am nervous about using alloy in this way. Also cost is a factor, the material cost is higher in the alloy, as well as the machining cost, as the alloy should really be cut on a waterjet which costs more than a laser. Irregardless i am planning on talking to a LVVTA certifier befoere i get them made. Cheers
  18. I know wheel adaptors can't be more than 25mm thick, i wasn't aware of a requirment for a minimum thickness of gearbox adaptor, will do some research on that. From my measurements 12mm allows for the ea flywheel to be used with no spacing, which (to my mind anyway) is far more desireable than having to space the flywheel. Cheers, Dan
  19. Hi all i'm looking at getting some ej to ea gearbox adaptor plates made up, they will be 12mm laser cut steel, will come drilled for the locator dowels on both motors, and bottom bolt holes which line up on, but only pilot holes for the top bolts so the end user can decide upon the best solution for thier application. I'm not too sure on cost thus far, obviously the more comittments to buy, the cheaper they will be, i would think that they will come back under $200, but will advise as soon as i know more. These have been accuratley measured off both an ea82 and an ej20, and a prototype has been fitted up with no issues, however no warantee will be expressed on implied as i am not a shop or an engineer. If there is interest then i will look at getting a few cut, ifn ot then i will just have my own made. Mods: As this is just an EOI thread i thought that this would be the appropriate forum to post within, if i'm wrong i apologise. Cheers, Dan
