Subaru Legacy Oil Change...any special things I should remember?

Recommended Posts

A mate and I are going to change the oil in my 99 BH5 Legacy in the next few days.

Any things that I need to remember?

Bought 4L of Castrol Magnatec 10W 40...apparently its good stuff and a oil filter.

Is 4L enough?

If you can think of anything i should remember then please comment.

cheers

Most (all?) 90's+ subies take 4.5L so 4L may be cutting it a bit fine. Recommended to change the crush washer on the sump plug if you don't want it to leak ($3 or so). Don't do up the filter too tight or it'll never come off again ;D

Edit: Actually on second thoughts, maybe it's just the turbo ones that take 4.5L? Do you have a manual that came with the car? Should say in there.

Local subaru dealer if there is one. Otherwise repco/supercheap should probably have something suitable. I've always just gotten filters/washers from the dealer with my cars

when i do an oil change i (personally) do the following:

(1) use STP engine flush

(2) replace the washer on the bung (good time to get a magnetic sump bung if you can, $15 off TM)

(3) once the new oil is in and before startup unplug crank angle sensor and crank untill oil light goes out

possibly look at putting some pro-ma mbl8 into the oil when you change it, as subaru cars are known for having ticky lifter issues

Hi guys, I changed the oil on my 96 BG5 Legacy Wagon last night. Had a couple of issues getting the original filter off but got there in the end. Did everything as per normal and screwed the new filter on as tight as I could by hand (I'm no massive guy but not weak as either) filled it up with some nice expensive Valvoline Syn Power and started her up, only to hear squirting noises and find all of the new oil on the ground under my car and it appears it has squirted out between the filter and its mounting... I am humurously looking at it as a very expensive engine flush but I really don't want to make the same mistake again so any ideas or better technigues would be appreciated...should I just use an oil wrench and tighten it more or do you think it is cross threaded or something? Can't wait to get new oil in it and start the engine, as soon as everything heats up theres going to be A LOT of smoke as the excess burns off.

Did you clean off the mounting surface for the filter, and did you lubricate the gasket on the new filter?

you will have left the gasket from the old filter on the engine / mount surface by all likelihood. Take off the new filter, see it has a rubber seal.

look at your old filter and see if it still has its seal attached. if not - find it on the engine mounting surface, REMOVE IT and reapply new filter with just the one seal.

tis a trick for new players.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
