ej20r noise?

the noise is more of a knock at cold and goes away when warm.

but is there when reved (around 1500 3000rpm.

not a loud knock

im hoping its something thats came lose.

Yea mine does this on start & cold. Sometimes randomly too. The mechanic I used said it's common with older engines. Mines done >100,000kms and it does it every so often. Just take it easy till she's warm!

had mine for 8'ish years was 100k when I bought it - now over 200k and going ok (I do have a spare motor sitting in shed as insurance)

the motor i put in mine was rebuilt 5000kms ago with race bearings and new head set.

so having just put the motor in doesnt boost my confidence of getting a good deal

was it rebuilt with diff pistons?

i know i put forgies in my car and it has slap not heaps but a little.

its my understanding that it comes from when the pistons cold and as they get hot the piston expands ever so slightly.

not sure bout a cure but you shouldn't really jump on the boost when a engines cold any way.

Has your engine got hydraulic valve lifters?They can make a noise on start up if they are sticking.

yea probly piston slap...which can mean either the bore is not perfectly round/worn and or the pistons are worn / not the corect size for the block...

u should be taking it easy on any car untill its warm anyway???

if it warms up and goes away i would point at piston slap as the pistons swell up wen hpt thus making ther tolerance smaller and no slap

if its still there at about 1500 to 3000 revs then could be big end bearing on way out.

Sounds very similar to when my ej20r bearings went. Could barely hear it at idle, not at all if u were sitting in the car, but at 2-3000 revs u could hear a decent clacking sound. Bearings were smashed to bits.

My JEs are pretty noisey, done 60,000 on them now. Hell of a clacking sound at cold idle, much louder than the busted bearings were, but quiet as above 2000-2500rpm. It can take up to 20mins of solid driving to get them quiet at idle. Dont think I would do forgies again in a daily driver.

But yea i'd be checking the oil for metal or getting someone to check it out just incase its not slap.

the dude/shop that rebored your block must not be able to bore properly. Folowing my spec sheet supplied with my JE pistons it gives you recomended clearence for different bore sizes and engine applications ie Street,Track,Drag. When my motor went in i was waiting to see how right they got it a man is my motor quiet! quieter then most GTB,s Ive heard. Mind you I got my piston skirts coated with SDF from HPC so that could be the difference..

yea slap is normally louder wen cold and louder wen hot (the pistons swelling up)

normally a big end will get noisier and noisier the more revs u give it...but they go in different ways i guess

yea goes away when warm but still there when reved till 1200rpm.

mite look it somethings hitting and just vibrating. or could be a stuffed tensioner.
