Differences in gearboxes: GTB, V3/V4 WRX/STI

Guest

Recommended Posts

Doing a bit of digging around before deciding what to do re- crunching 2nd gear..

I notice that the same gearbox code is applied to the following cars:

GT-B

V3 WRX

V3 STI

V4 WRX

V4 STI

I would have (wrongly, so it seems?) assumed that the WRX's and STI's had slightly different components making up their gearboxes.

Obviously a V4 gearbox would be a few years newer than the V3 variants - but why would a V3 STI gearbox be almost twice the price of a V4 WRX gearbox, if they have the same component?

Can't wait to hear the informed responses flowing in :D

Many thanks to all.

its the TY752VB (BCAA) that your referring to.

No reason a v4 will be a few years newer (at most only 1 year or even made in the same year if it was 97). I would be more concerned with how many kms the box has been.

I too actually though the WRX boxes were lighter in its gear sets (therefore not as strong), but the link i just looked at (posted on cs) said they are the same for WRX and STI.. Also subscribed to the 'real' answer.

That's the one..

So people who are trying to flog STI gearboxes off stating that they're stronger than WRX gearboxes (even though the have the same part numbers) are just talking bollocks to try and get an extra buck or two?

Here's a doozy for all those in the know (I don't know much about gear ratio's!)

The 'TY752VBBAA' out of a RS/GT BG5 appears to have the same ratio's, but has a 4.11 final drive as opposed to the 4.44 final drive from the 'TY752VBCAA' box.

Would I be able to fit one of these boxes to my WRX without too much drama?

Have found one which has had rebuild synchro's not too long ago, before the vehicle was rear-ended..

as long as you get the rear diff in 4.111 to match yer it'l bolt straight up. It will have a longer ratio (lower rpm at 100kmph) than what your used to.

This is what i want on my legacy. It sits between 2500 and 3000rpm at 100 - 110kmph. Makes it suck the gas up.

sounds about right?suck up the gas like any other car?i hada to do a aacourse lastyear and they showd up a few good tips on saving gas.noy huge amounts but enuf to notice.as in using your gears and breaks.easing the accelerater after each change of gear ect.just lil things.

i dont think thats right.the might have the same model number on the box.but i would say whats in side is dirrfent as in the gear ect

that is compared to gmaego's car with the 4.444 ratio. i have no idea what yours is so may not apply. between 2500-and 3000 is lowish to start with honestly.

Has anyone on here opened up and inspected the inside of a GEARbox before?

yer was a very novice.. "oh shit thats how it all works".. look

i have a 4.111 box and 3000rpm is somewhere between 105 and 110 is that right?

what do the 4.444 boxes sit at then?

depends what box you have mate. my comments to gmaego are in relation to running a TY752VBBCAA with either 4.444 or 4.111 diffs

You also have to remember that if you've changed the rolling diamtere (IE put different sized tyres or alloys on the car) then it'll be out quite a bit.

I checked my speedometer VS my Navman and discovered that at speedo 100kph, road speed was actually 91kph or so. Road speed at 100kph was speedometer 108kph.

To this note, I 'thought' that my car did 2,800rpm @ 100kph - whereas it was 2,800rpm at 91kph.

Both my 1995 BG5 GT (5mt) and 1998 V4 JDM WRX do close enough to 3,000rpm @ 100kph (road speed).

No need to appologise :D

All three gearboxes should read 'TY752VBCAA', and all internal components are IDENTICAL - from what I've been told by numerous reliable sources..

As for why 'gnedefs' box is all sloppy, maybe it's been thrashed like a porn star?

WRX Wagons have different gearboxes to the GTB, V3 & V4 WRX & STI's.

JDM Impreza WRX & WRX STI 5-Door MY97-98 TY752VBCBA

JDM Impreza WRX & WRX STi Ver.III/IV MY97-98 TY752VBCAA

JDM Legacy GT B-Spec MY97-98 TY752VBCAA 4.444

(also GT B-Spec Limited)

yea just read up on this

http://www.gearhack.com/myink/ViewPage.php?file=docs/Subaru%20Transmission%20Chart

my 97 wrx and sti and GTB have the same number??

but my id tag shows a different number to my GTB box number? or is mine a GTB box? LOL im confused now

just checked mine

my id tag shows TY752VBCBA and my box shows TY752VBCAA

As per above, Impreza Wagon's have different boxes to the sedans and coupes..

Shorter 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th - as well as final drive. Must be to compensate for the added weight :D

mine does about 3400 revs at 100 km/h :( but thats probably because its one of the imprezza super shift gearboxes made by pivot? number 1856/5000 according to the gearbox codes its the same as the 22b gearboxes...

That'd explain it - the 22b was never designed as a motorway car lol

yeap noticed off the chart the final drive is different...seems to go bloody good with this gearbox

Super!

Now, back to the thread..

I would prefer a GTB box as, one could only assume, that it hasn't been thrashed as badly as a WRX / STI..

Anyone have the tools and know-how to fit a box for me?

pretty easy to do man if u can manage to remove the drive shaft and the front axels your half way there!!! then its just the mount and 5 bolts on the bell housing which includes removing starter motor and then just a few wires on the box for reverse etc and speedo cable needs to be unclipped (easiest to unclip the half way clip iv found)...then just disconect clutch fork and shell come out

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
