Hampton Downs - Baffled Sump

Apoligies if i have this in the wrong area

A few mates might be attending a track day in the next few months, I said to myself I wouldnt with this new car but when mates are going im tempted. I'll prob have to switch back to my factory wheels :( cause itll scrape too much otherwise lol.

And of course itll need a baffled sump, been told you only need it with semi's but others have said even with road tyres people have had problems. Been told that you can make the last corner into a double apex but I dont want to take any risks. So where is the best place to get it done?

Thanks

PBMS do a "Street" spec baffled sump that is $200 and you send your sump and they weld more baffles in. Best value for money..a full race sump will be in excess of $1.5k

For hamptons id definatly have a sump of some sort after popping my motor there and seen and heard of many others killed there by oil surge issues

IMO the street spec sump from PBMS isn't up to the task for hamptons, I have the street spec sump in my foz, have run at puke, taupo and manfeild without issues but none of those tracks have the massive corners like hamptons. PBMS sumps don't increase capacity of the sump so during the long corners all the oil doesn't drain back to the sump as it normally would and hence the motor starves of oil. The more expensive sumps increase capacity as well as baffling so the oil doesn't run run out as quick.

All this is from what i've heard and i am by no means an expert

But if you do want a cheaper race sump check out Mitchel motorsport in te rapa

There would be a 3+ week wait on one tho as i just bought his last one that was made up

im running 1.14s round there with a stock standard sump, with full slicks. I run an accusump though. available from cardwells etc. about $369 if i recall. oh and watch your braking point coming into barrell51. brake at the top of the hill and your bound to end in tears. oh and turn 1 can catch you on the unawares.

basically a big cannister with a piston inside it, on one side of the piston there is air pressure (set to approx 20psi when empty) and on the other side is oil pressure. only one oil line to the cannister on the oil side, this is plumbed into the main oil gallery on the engine through the top of the block (you will see a m18 plug towards the rear of the block iirc). to fill the cannister you overfill your engine oil by however much the accusump holds, start the engine then shut off the tap that you have installed in the oil line. turn engine off and recheck oil level. Now this is the good bit, next time you go to start the engine, open the tap, watch your oil pressure guage come right up, then start the engine. How goods that, oil pressure to your mains and big ends before you even turn the key. It works by the oil pressure forcing the piston inside back, compressing the air on the other side, when for arguements sake, your cornering and the oil pickup comes uncovered, the air pressure (now 80-100psi) forces oil through the line and into the bearings maintaining a constant supply of high oil pressure.

what about the twinscroll sump on the newer STI? how good are those? it looks like it uses less oil

no better man mine had the same amount of baffles as the early one..I sent mine to PBMS when i got it rebuilt...Cheap piece of mind for in a road car in my opinion...given subis genearlly die from oil issues lol

I reckon its slightly better... It has one side cut off it (when compared with a normal single scroll sump), so basically the oil cant surge away from the pick-up on that side.

I have seen a few later model subarus pushed hard at the track (by people that can drive) on good tyres and they have had no issues... Most of the Version 8 Spec C production race cars from a few years back ran standard sumps and didnt have any problems.

cant promise you WONT do a bearing but itl certainly help.....even motors with the best sump and the best cooling setup still do bearings on occasion for whatever reason....there aint no bulletproof answer to not running one...just a few things that can be done to prevent it haha

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
