can you tell the diffrence between blocks

called possum bourne up today to find out what block they used on my car.they told me the guy 'murray' who built my engine has left and they dont have the records anymore.hmm :-\

at the time it didnt fuss me what block they used i just wanted the car back.now im curious,they cant remember.they rember my car but not what engine he used,he said there was a few closed decks going around at that time so it may have one on it.but hes unsure.

so my question is can you tell from looking at the block if its just a v3-v4 block or other without having to strip it down..he's still trying to find out for me

theres a hatching pattern around hte starter from memory and a couple of other minor differences but i cant member off the top of my head

on the underneath of the oil filler cap is printed the year (if its the original cap)

i.e. my GT has '94' printed on it

the hatching and lines on the block where the starter goes in is the only way ive eva known to tell CD from the outside.. (mentioned above )

some CD blocks are missing that hatching also, I stripped one down a few months ago thinking it was a crap one and turned out to be a mint closed deck.

Dont worry too much about having a closed deck block, I know of a track car running open deck over 250kw atw and boosting as high as 2 bar with no drama. pistons and rods are what you should be worried about

im only aiming for 240kw on my setup anyway.so i should last a long time.

as for the block i will check that out,its kinda weird they wouldnt store information about the rebuilds.they did a good job the,id just like to know what im running.
