How To: Adjust Your Handbrake. With Pics

Recommended Posts

Well I got sick of my handbrake not working very well at Motorkhanas, so today I thought I'd give it a go so it's working properly for the Grasskhana this Sunday. My hand brake was adjusted a few months ago at the lever end, but it just wasn't working well enough for my liking. So here's how to adjust it at the other end...

If I can do this without any trouble then so can you

What you need:

- A couple of screwdrivers

- A Jack

- Jack stands

- A small torch will help

1. Jack the rear of the car up and put it on jack stands so you don't get crushed

2. Have a look behind the wheels and find the little rubber plug that you can see in the pic below:

3. Remove the rubber plug. I used a small screwdriver to get it out. This is what you will see now:

4. Grab your torch and have a look inside the hole. You will see a small cog:

5. Use your screwdriver to rotate this cog UPWARDS. This will move the handbrake shoes closer to the drum. Keep rotating it upwards until it becomes difficult to move the wheel

6. Back it off a few "clicks" by moving the cog DOWNWARDS until the wheel starts moving freely again. For mine this was about 4 clicks.

7. Take your car off the jack stands and take it for a test drive to make sure the handbrake isn't rubbing and slowing the car down. If this is the case then you'll have to jack it up and back it off a bit more.

8. Done. You should notice a decent improvement, and you will notice the handbrake lever doesn't have as much travel. If it still has too much travel it will also need adjusting at the lever end.

Disclaimer: I will not be held responsible for any injuries, deaths or damaged property as a result of doing mad handbrake turns because your handbrake now works properly.

firstly, back of handbrake cable before any adjustment at the wheels - this is done at the handbrake lever

then adjust till wheel stops turning (when pushed with hand) then back off 6 clicks - a lesser amount may cause a huge suddder thru the rear axles as the brake warms and binds

then readjust handbrake cable to a setting of 6-8 clicks

pretty well written post, just wanted to clarify a few points

oh and the direction of travel for the adjusters is for when the adjsuters are factory installed

Often when a wheel bearing is done, the adjuster get installed around the wrong way, which is no biggie but the adjuster works backwards

True, good point. You'll figure out pretty quickly if you're not turning it in the right direction anyway.

Here's some video proof that the adjustment works: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Canterbury-Car-Club-Motorkhana-Autocross/187203601312211 (see the videos of my silver Legacy)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
