Tank is earthed anyway

No prob even if your -ve connection came loose and the wire touched the inside of the tank

The fuel pump on my 1991 legacy RS randomly stopped working and I don't know why.

Its sine been replaced and would like to know what went wrong.

It was 18 years old and decided it had had enough of life.........

They tend to do that, just be glad the human race is more resiliant than the mechanical race

If you open it up, the brushes have probably worn out. That is if fuel pumps use conventional brushes.

If you are going to use silicon sealer anywhere near the fuel or air or oil it must be O2 sensor and catylitic converter safe or they will both end up contaminated. That silicon sealer recommenced was diesel safe, it didn't say sensor safe though.

Even the slightest wiff of silicon can cause failures.

As Itchi Ban suggests, do it properly and you will not need sealers.
