What can make a tapping sound from the flywheel area?

Recommended Posts

Just went a dropped a DVD back in the rain. 1st gear hill start on a bend got a little loose in the wet. then there was some kid of clunk under the car that I took for a sloppy engine mount or something knocking. then when I came down the drive way with the window down (to get the mail) I could hear a tapping that varied with both engine and wheel speed but only with the clutch partially of fully lifted.

With the car in idle and clutch down it's normal but in Nuetral and clutch up it goes tap tap tap tap about twice a second.

Any ideas? It's pissing down with rain and dark so I can't look at it right now.

Could it be a stone in the flywheel or something? I'm worried it could be major :(

My money is on your gearbox (from your discription)

1st or 2nd gear with a tooth missing

Take it to a workshop to have checked (5min diagnosis )

Mine made all kinda of wierd noises from the flywheel area when my pressure plate was loose.

Nakkered gearbox does sound likely however.

Able to post up a sound clip of the noise?

have a look down the clutch fork hole with a light and mirror and check for any new dents in the bellhousing, failing that check gearbox oil for any metal on the plug...

happens when I'm stationary with no wheels turning. I thought about that first but then stopped and was still going.

Didn't do a launch or anything, was already moving but got a bit leadfooted and the back 'may have' stepped out a little but only for 1-1/2 seconds or so.

then drove as normal. No crunching. Think it's a diagnosis best left for daylight. If it's nothing obvious apparent I'll whisk off to the shoppe and see what the man has to say.

Must be savage to dent the bell!!! There's always metal on the plug lol

i was thinkin metal as in half a tooth or such.... and a broken spring geting thrown around at 6000 rpm will destyroy the inside of your bellhousing.

I can imagine that. was joking about the metal. It's gonna be funny when I drain the oil and theres a pair of teeth on the plug

I spose the worst case is a few hours under the car and $500-800 :(

Not like anyone died but it still sucks. Just when I spent a year clearing the Creditcard. The wife's gonna kill me. The first words will be "so we're not getting that new soafa then?"

went outsied and moved the car (to infront of the garage) and the noise is more like someone rubbing their knuckles down a wash board or other corrugations. Quite thuddy. poked my head down there and it sounds nearer the flywheel/clutch that gearbox.

Will look inside best I can otherwise it's a stripdown and look inside.

If i'm just looking at the clutch should i bother draining trans oil? it's only 2000km old and 4litres can't be that heavy. Will it spill out the top anywhere?

bearings dont always have an even tap to them

i've lost a tooth on 2nd driven before, and its a fairly noticeable even ticking

when parked depressing the clutch should slow the ticking to a stop, unless your clutch is not disengaging fully. in this case put it in gear with the clutch depressed and the noise should stop

if still ticking then its flywheel/clutch/engine related as nothing is moving in the gearbox

I looked in my workshop manual-should've done it first lol-BTW I've got the whole 2gig of Workshop manual for the foz and the TSB's too if anyone needs them, I'll find the link or burn it to disk and give it at the next meet

3. Unusual noise comes from transmission.

NOTE:

If a noise is heard when the vehicle is

parked with its engine idling and if a noise

ceases when the clutch is disengaged, it

may be considered that the noise is coming

from the transmission.

(a) Insufficient or improper lubrication Lubricate with specified oil or replace.

(b) Worn or damaged gears and bearings

NOTE:

If the trouble is only wear of the gear teeth

surfaces, only a high whirring noise will

occur at high speeds, but if any part is broken,

rhythmical clicking sounds will be

heard

Those notes are just a guide, not a diagnosis.

First off go out and try driving it in all the gears, listening whether the noise gets louder when you put your foot down and gets quieter when you ease half off and then quieter still when you back almost off... not right off so the gears are brakeing the car but just enough so they are "floating" ie no load on either side of the gears, power side or over-run side.

Before you go for the drive make your self a grid with a row for each gear and a column for each throttle position... on, half on and float. put a cross in each box if it gets louder and a tick if it makes almost no difference.

Then get back in here with the results and someone will tel you if one(and which one) of your gears have chipped.

That's what a mechanic would do... except without the chart to record the results.

Uhh.....

Id say thats a damned solid diagnosis right there. If noise stops when clutch is disengaged - its a gearbox fault.

Then you just refer to the transmission troubleshooting chart.

What youve posted is pretty much irrelevant as if any one of the gears is broken the box will have to be split. At which point further damage will be obvious

That's fine Keltic... for you. I thought that poster number one might to know what he has before he beguins though.

I'm a mechanic and I have to diagnose things thorougly before I rip them to bit's, and give estimates before I start. For me guessing isn't good enough.

Also, if the noise goes away when you push the clutch in... it doesn't guarantee that the noise is coming out of the gearbox. It could be the pressure plate, or release bearing or crank.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
