learning car

Recommended Posts

hi guys Im starting to look for a suby basically to pull apart and rebuild and learn how every thing works and hopefully make it run. i have a few people to fall back on for help with this idea. any suggestions on type and some thing that i should stay away from eg major problems with the engine ( because i cant afford to by a fully working car to pull apart) i don\'t care if it takes me a year to get it working again its mainly to gain alittle knowledge about what goes on and how every thing works.

Buy an old dead corolla for -$500. Something with a blown h\'g or something. Buy a headgasket and bare minimums for probably under $100-200 then sell it as a runner for 2k. If you feel like fun pull the engine out to do it it will teach you a lot. You will either make money or be able to swap it for something different that teaches you something new.

Just seen you meant suby. Buy an old ts-r or something or RS.

Yeah an inline 4 cylinder is probably the easiest motor to work with, if you want to do a subaru though get a bc/bf legacy with the 1800 sohc throttle body injection motor. Much simpler and easy to deal with. Only two cams to time up on the way back together. Plus they\'d be cheap as for a rough one.

Good idea though, best thing you can do to learn is pull something apart and ask knowledgable people when you want to clarify how something works.

Avoid the SPFI 1800 like the plague! Those engines are loathsome lumps of alloy, that guzzle gas faster than they move (you know, you\'ve driven mine :P). Make sure you get something MPFI, a 2.2 bc or 1600 impreza or something. I actually find MPFI much simplerto understand, it\'s just logical.

Swing by my place on Saturday after work, I\'m changing the coolant in mitches intercooler, taking my timing cover off to inspect something on the aforementioned loathsome lump (ill show yah how the timing belt stuff works), and heck, if we have time, might put the new starter in Amy\'s wagon.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
