STI blocks vs non STI blocks, whats the difference?

ok so what other things need to be upgraded in an ej20 when going for big power?

EJ20's have a bit of a bad reputation for running bearings...would using ACL race series bearings be enough to fix this or are there other issues?

I'm rebuilding my V3 STi engine with a closed deck block, eagle rods and wiseco pistons so it should be able to make pretty good power....what would be the next weak link of the engine that is likely to fail?

Theres some trickery involved in rebuilds regarding the "running bearings" issue. Talk to username Ichiban about that.

I think they run bearings due to poor maintenance prior to arriving from Japan, change oil within 5000kms and top up if needed during this interval and use quality synthetic oil.

You could also use ARP fasteners for added strength.

As far as weak links go the next one would be your drivetrain. Maintain use of your stock clutch and don't launch it, some might say you should save your pingas and bolt on a 6spd prior to upping the power.

Also if your rebuilding for more power you will need an ECU upgrade. Especially if your upgrading your injectors/turbocharger etc

I guess the big reason is, there is no replacement for displacement ? Or so says my friend upgrading his 2.6 to 2.8.

I assumed ( maybe wrongly ) that there were so many stroker kits for cars to solve this.

Then again, I only use my car on the track, so maybe that wouldn't be as big of a deal. As mentioned, I really am new to all this

BEB's fail due to lack of oil (or as my understanding) so if u keep your oil delervery in good nick youllbe fine... you can baffel the sump to stop the oil sloshing around and starving the engine during cornering.

next weakest like? clutch, but once thats upgraded, your gearbox... youll lose 2nd gear on an agreasive launch with a heavy duty clutch easy, would pay to look at replacing your clutch when u do your engine anyway... its easy to do while the block is out

I dont agree with that at all. I have a 3 puck clutch in my RS (which if you know anything about clutches - you will know is rather unpleasant on the drivetrain) and am using a Ver 3 non-STI RA box, I have yet to break anything driveline related. Thats after 5 full days worth of drag racing (Masterton and Laws Rd), as well as countless launches at autocrosses and other events, as well as testing settings out. Ive litterally given the car over 100 launches. Some have bogged, some have spun up two or four wheels. NO ISSUES.

As long as you treat your drivetrain with respect, you shouldnt break things. If your going to launch, slip the clutch a little at the bite point so that you dont completely shock the drivetrain. When you hook second, dont flat shift. And in my opinion - launch with more revs than you need, to make sure you loose traction or eat clutch - rather than the more expensive option of hurting your gearbox.

I may not be the greatest expert, but I can talk from personal experience when I say the above. Treat your car sensibly and launch properly and you shouldnt have problems.

PS - Raydeo, this isnt an attack on you, Im just trying to make sure that people understand that Subarus dont generally have glass gearboxes - its the knucklehead behind the wheel thats the problem!

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
