What are my engine management options?

Recommended Posts

I\'d like to pull some more power from my \'96 WRX (GC8C48D w/ Z4 ECU) but after all my research it seems I\'ll end up nowhere but the scrap yard unless I get some programmable engine management system.

Obviously the ideal situation is install a Link G4 and find/have someone create a tune to install but the reality is my finances won\'t allow for a G4 right away (considering the cost could match what I paid for the car)

Do I have any options other than a brand new G4? What have others used or heard of

Thanks in advance!

How far are you going with your car long term? Thats the first thing that comes into it.

G1/possumlink if you just want more power and to max what you have and may as well do 440cc injectors, TD05 and walbro. FMIC would be a good idea to but combo will be good for a safe 200-210wkw if the engines in good shape. Retain the stock airbox too.

Wire in will cost outweighs the benefits if youre only going this far.

G4 if youre going to change turbo to something bigger than VF22/TD05. Wire in is good here as you can delete what you want vs the plug in but is more work.

My 2c.

Realistically I think long term I\'d be going for what you said in option 1 (tdo5, injectors, f.pump) + bov/cai, the engine is pretty solid w/ previous owner of 8 years producing a big pile of service & maintenance receipts (no ticks/knocks/scary noises)

I\'ve read mixed opinions between TMIC and FMIC and I think this\'ll be keeping the FMIC

I guess I\'ll need to do some research into the wiring effort required, I\'d prefer to do the work myself + some aid from my sparky brother-in-law (albeit not auto sparky, but close enough, right?)

Thanks for the tips

The sti have a smooth charge pipe which is where the gain in them comes from. Iirc the pipe/intercooler is one piece and generally they all have a heaps of bent fins. Straighten the fins if theyre bent.

Roo means upgrade to the sti ecu/afm/injectors combination. Im not sure if that combo makes them det prone or not but generally messing around with that stuff means you cant run as much boost as theyre maped for and doesnt optimize what the setup can deliver.

Those are the words i was looking for :P

Never really known what a 6S was like on anything that didn\'t have it from factory but i assumed it might have been okay, guess end of the day it may not be worth the risk on your pride and joy

Ah yes, I remember not long after I bought this car I looked at some "miracle performance chip" that was to be added on to the existing ECU, I tried to find it again just now but they seem to have disappeared.

I\'ve found the following ECU\'s, although I\'m not sure of anyone that does PowerFC tunes in wellington? [could always look into finding a map from the net though] (plus there\'s this mega squirt thing that I\'m not sure is compatible)

I\'ll do some research on this charge pipe and hopefully come back with info + knowledge

Power fc is the way to go mate, I have tuned hundreds of them on the Pre 2001 WRX/STi. They are a great option and value for money for this model.

PM me if you want a price for a full Dyno tune on our Dynapack, we are in Hawera which is about a 2.5hr drive from you. I have a big client base from Wellington/Kapiti region if you want to ask them about me

I\'m using a megasquirt in my kit car. I\'m very happy with it!!!

True, but you are/have the services of an electrical wizard.

Personally speaking, for anything less than about 220wkw, I\'d get a PossumLink, for anything more, Link G4.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
