Rear CV Stuck in Hub

Hey guys, I\'m stuck.

I\'m removing the rear axles from my car and I\'ve managed to get both ends out of the diff but one is stuck in the hub.

I\'ve tried soaking it in WD40 and hitting it with a hammer but it\'s not moving. I have not hit it very hard because I read somewhere that you can mushroom the end.

I don\'t want to damage it because I plan on selling it.

Is there any tricks to getting it out?

I used a 20ton press to get mine out, and ended up wrecking the strut mount on the hub.

Get a spare nut. Grind off the fine edge. Wind it on so its flush with the axles end. Beat the living snot (carefully) with a sledge hammer.

WD40 is no good for that job as it\'s just a water dispersant. You need a penetrating spray. Wurth Rost Off Ice is the best. CRC also make a half decent dispersant.

Try chemz penetrene Ive never used it but we\'ve had a fair few customers say it works better than the wurth product. NZ owned and manufactured also.

Fact of the mater is if its seized your most likely to break something trying to get it out. Wether you use the beat the snot out of it technique (personal fav, releases the anger) or the press. Moral of the story is, GREASE the CVs splines when you put them in.

make sure you hit the nut and not the hub then hit as hard as you like

I wonder how the wheel bearing handles being smashed repeatedly with a sledge hammer.

Cheers for the replies guys, bought some CRC Penetr8 today (worked a treat on diff cradle bolts which were stuck also) I soaked it then tried whacking it with a sledge hammer but it didn\'t budge at all.

The new problem, I am trying to remove the hub and cv together now but I can\'t figure out how to get the handbrake cable out.

I made a puller that takes my 10 tonne porta power, and bolts to the wheel studs, usually removes the axle, in car sometimes require heating and tapping while pressure is on,

theres a small clip where the cable comes into the hub, then you just need to remove the back handbrake shoe and it should come out.

will try today, been doing huge hours driving so have not been in workshop it is pretty easy though it is just a multi use cross bar that screws to the thread on the porta power hydraulic ram( I machined up a boss and cut a thread in it ), I then bolt it to a space saver that is bolted to the hub
