More damping = softer ride???

Ok, this might be a stupid question, but I'm not sure if I've gone full retard or not here.

At the weekend I turned the high-speed compression damping on my suspension from fully anti-clockwise (which SHOULD be wide open) to fully clockwise (should be fully closed, i.e. max damping).

This made the ride noticeably softer.

I'm trying to work out what's going on here, I figure it must be one of the following:

1. My shocks are weird, the manual I have is wrong, and full-clockwise on that adjuster is actually full soft

2. More damping somehow made the ride feel softer, in which case maybe half-way or quarter-way or 5/30 will be better than maxed out?

3. I'm completely derping out, somehow.

what suspension is it ? i very highly doubt it has externally adjustable high speed compression dampening .

any adjuster that is inline with the shock shaft only amounts to a needle valve that bypasses the shim stack . mainly low speed rebound . and low speed comp to a lesser extent

Ohlins, it's 3-way adjustable, high speed + low speed compression on the external reservoir and rebound on the bottom of the strut.

It's wanky suspension and way too complicated for me
