V11 STi <JDM 2.0 vs NZ New 2.5>

Recommended Posts

So looking at the prospect of purchasing a V11 STi.

Everyone is out to get a bargain or the best possible deal for themselves and clearly the NZ 2.5L are slightly cheaper than a JDM 2.0 equivalent.

I've read all the online comparisons between USDM and JDM and understand that the 2.0 is a stronger motor overall for mods etc. and am aware of the obvious extras the JDM ones come with such as Recaros.

The trust is, I just really want for daily drive and the occasional casual playday at the track. It will be a family car and will be buying a manual one.

I don't plan on doing any major mods- just keeping it stock but chucking on good tyres, pads and maybe new rotors if needed.

The most I would do is a turboback or catback exhaust and maybe a remap/tune.

With that in mind, in the context of NZ, what are the pros and cons of purchasing a 2.0 vs a 2.5 given my needs?

Is the 2.5 really as bad as they are made out to be?

I have read on the forums here about them having issues with the engine i think the both the 2.0 and the 2.5 ones to do with carbon build up...cant find the article but just do your research bout that...

why not drive both and go from there?

The 2.5's don't have the best reputation for longevity but more displacement = more potential for power plus you get low down power

the 2.0 come with basically the best of the best ej20 engine, forged internals, twin scroll, avcs. Easily modable later on upto 250kw without need to change internals

No forged pistons after v7 sti.

The 2.5 is a mint engine gets a bad rep because pricks dont understand theyre choked as fck in factory form. The have a turbo to small for a 2l and the tune is based on emissions. Throw a decent turbo with a decent flowing hotside and a 3in turbo back then tune it. Then watch it last and enjoy a torquey fun daily.

The early Jdm v11s leaned out towards redline, subaru Japan offered a reflash fix which sorted that particular issue.

Funnily enough, the early v11s, Jdm again, had a bad batch of rings resulting in premature engine failure. I had one. Expensive it was. Very.

I wouldbt buy one pre 2010, which is when they released the sedan shape as well as the hatch.

go for the facelift if you can afford it.

as well as sedan option the suspension was much improved, with front spring rates increased by 20%, rear spring rates by about 50 % as well as changes to the steering.

effectively spec c suspension

:D

I knew i had read that some where here that had issue with the V11, did they still make the hatch after 2010 though?

a) drive them both and make a decision, I like the 2.5 far more but either is a rocket of a daily to be fair

b) get one with a warranty

c) thrash constantly with no worry about reliability issues

If track work required buy a sh!tty old GC and tow it with the new car to avoid b) and c) being voided

Go facelift ;)... my 2012 WRX 2.5 had to be fully rebuilt at 120,000km before I purchased it, but I'm unaware of how the previous owner had treated it as I got it through a dealer. Low down power is great but not sure how comparable the whole thing is to the 2.5 STi.

  • 4 years later...

I've had my 2.5 for over 2 years now. I love the power it offers and how it delivers it. Mines a v11 2009 Hatch. My last wrx was a '95 I bought on 2002. My latest STI is just astonishing round hills and cornering. As it was when it left the factory.  Can't go wrong. I honestly will not be upgrading or updating from my 09 Hatch.  I will spend 5k on paint and 2K on rims many years from now. Great shape. A future  Classic I believe

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
