Questions about BPE/Spec B/5EAT/Brakes

Alright after having the new Leggy for a few days there are a few things i need to address, car deets in signature.

TRANSMISSION

The transmission has a weird knock whilst somewhere between fourth and third gear, it knocks ONLY on downshifts and this is just while hooning around is normal drive mode, seems like its having issues with the converter lockup? Basically when i'm slowing down and the transmission changes down i get a good knock which will wake me up, this happens whilst fully warmed up too, its NOT a bushing.

Fluid looks pretty gnarly, Should i be going to the dealer and buying the liquid gold subaru HP ATF that i hear this trans NEEDS to operate well? Should i go get the new transmission .PAK file reflashed at the dealer too? Should i slap on a new spin on AT filter? I lopped off the battery cables overnight and the issue went away but has returned today.

BRAKES

Ive got kinda bad steering wheel wobble under brakes, my front discs are probably poked, Anywhere in NZ i can get these for a decent price? What size/part numbers are they? Could it be the pads? Ill probably try new pads first as ill want to be changing them anyway if i get new discs.

SUSPENSION

The suspension is a bit knocky and unsettled when driving over some of Aucklands worser roadwork, Ive had the endlink knock on other subaru's and it does not sound very much like that.

Could it be my bilsteins, are these easy to get rebuilt or is it more cost effect to whack in a new set?

Also when it comes to suspension upgrades, are the endlinks even worth replacing if they worn out or loose? I'll probably be throwing in a better swaybar in the rear so stop the body roll, are endlinks worth doing as an upgrade alongside sway bars?

Ill probably throw more questions in here once ive remembered them.

Cheers guys, feel free to roast me for asking too many questions.

Cheers,

My sig aint showing up (2004 Legacy BPE Spec B 3.0r)

For the transmission, start with a flush and a see if there is a PAK file update. If it's still problematic then you can start looking at other things. I have a similar issue on the missus' Tribeca. I'm getting both done tomorrow.

Brakes. If you have shudder in the steering wheel then your front rotors are probably a bit uneven. (they dont actually warp as such just uneven wear due to pad deposits left on the disk from heating and cooling) If you have shudder in your butt, then it's the rear disks. If there is enough meat left in the disk then you can get them skimmed at most mechanics and get some new pads at the same time so both surfaces are smooth. If you are just driving on the street then a good set of ceramic pads will do you well. If you plan on any track days etc then you need to get something a bit more grippy. These tend to make a lot of dust though and eat your rotors. If you are replacing the rotors, they are 316mm at the front and 290mm in the rear with drum in disk for the handbrake. Not sure on part numbers.

Suspension: So many things can knock on the suspension. End links, Bilsteins, LCA bushes. It's a process of elimination. If you want to sort the steering a bit and get the roll under control a bit then start with a new rear sway bar. The stock links aren't too bad but should be replaced if worn. I'd invest in some new upgraded sway bar mounts if you plan on driving it hard. The stock ones can bend if you do the bar and then thrash it. (track days)

Cheers for the reply,

I just gave Subaru Greenlane a ring, turns out that the only ATF they supply is Motul ATF 1A for 25 bucks for a 1L bottle, crazy.

Fluid alternatives? Valvoline Maxlife ATF?

I'd rather not pay $275 for 11L of this stuff unless its the only thing that'll work.

I'll have a look at the suspension/brakes over the long weekend, pads/Bushes/Endlinks are cheap so i'll start there.

I have an o5 bpe 3.0 5eat and it LOVES castrol transmax multivehicle.

I had it flushed used about 14L of the castrol stuff and reset the tcu through freessm

And knocks went away. Mind you its like a baaaaam when it knocks. Not like a little knock, like a baaaang knock. So yeah went away pkus added benefit of smoother shifting

Cheers for the recommendation, Ill have a look for some, what does everybody else use in their 5EAT's?

I went for the Subaru stuff, but my understanding is that Castrol make it for Subaru. I personally go for OEM when you're dealing with specialised transmissions, especially if they are being problematic, if you put non OEM in and its still playing up can you be sure that you can rule out the fluid ??

I called Subaru Winger Greenlane and they said the ONLY Atf they stock is Motul ATF 1A, which is not even OEM fluid? I figured they'd have the Subaru stuff?

It meets Subaru OEM spec (ATF-HP) which is most likely why.

Motul is good stuff, so is Penrite, Redline and Amsoil, if it meets the Subaru Spec and you can save some $$$. Id give Winger in Hamilton a call and see if they stock genuine Subaru stuff first.

From memory the stock LCA bushings used in the Legacy are oil filled and are usually poked by 60,000 kms, for mine I ended up getting Nolathane replacement from both the front lower front and front lower rear control arm bushings (LCA bushings). Autolign in Hamilton did a good price. $150NZ all up.

$150 sounds pretty cheap for the front+rear. When was it? Can you still get the same price?

Yeah that's what I thought to, but sure enough it was like $75 for the front and $65 for the rear, + GST. Give Autolign in Hamilton a call. Was about 2 years ago

Install was about 45 minutes per side + wheel alignment.

Must've been a seriously good deal, just got a quote from Autolign:

Front lower arm front bush kit: $136 plus GST

Front lower arm rear bush kit: $151 plus GST

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
