What legacy to get

Subru

Recommended Posts

First of all, I don't know much about legacy's and the makes and models etc.

I have been thinking of getting a legacy instead of a wrx or sti because they are probably a bit cheaper and I think they look very decent especially with a drop and some nice wheels. Im thinking of spending up to 12k max. I pretty much just want good handling, decent power, low kms etc (has to be older than the 2009 ones, they don't look good imo...). I know there are so many legacy whisperers here so I wanna know what year and model you guys would recommend.

Or should I just get an Sti... xD

You'll never get the same power level you can with a STI without swapping turbo's which can get rather involved and they're obviously a fair bit heavier but they're still damn fun. You looking for an auto or manual? Manual you'd probably be aiming for a later year prefacelift GTB with that budget unless you're willing to wait around for a good deal to come up. Auto you could probably talk someone with a facelift GTB into going that low

You just don't know how to cook them ;)

Not many people do as the majority still never look quite right, especially side on.

okay will take a look. Yeah the Sti would have a much better power/weight.

Yes definitely manual :D

My RSK (BE) was the best all-round car I've had. It was comfortable, secondary turbo boost was always fun and it handled pretty good considering size, was fairly horrible on gas however no matter how nanny the driving style. I've driven a few of the next gen (BP/BL) and there is obviously a massive jump in refinement, however in saying that they didn't feel as involving as the older generations (maybe it was just me/ yet to drive a modded one). You can't go wrong with a Legacy though, fantastic all-round cars :), i'd have a drive of the different generations and go from there.

wagon or sedan? Please tell me you are joining the wagon mafia? :):):)

Having been looking at swagons a lot recently, there is a price soft spot for 04/05 pre-facelift. Assume it's the same for Sedans though can't be sure.  Though I have been looking at autos which are much more common than manual.  I wonder if you might be best importing direct from Japan since you are after a manual....others will have a better feel for this.

Yes Wagon mafia all the way xD

I though about importing but I was told that Turbo Subarus over 10 years old generally dont pass emissions (yes the world is crazy). Maybe I can import a legacy? Im not sure :(

On a quick skim of the Japanese auctions, the 04/05 GTs appear to have a 2 letter emissions code (eg.g. TA-BP5) but there are 06 GTs that have 3 letter (e.g. CBA-BP5) and therefore could be imported.

If you got a 3rd gen rev d you would be way under your 12k budget, at least on the initial purchase price of the car...will be harder to find one with low kms though as they are getting old now.

I think if you were looking for more of a project, buying a 3rd gen would be a good option, whereas if you want to buy something and just do incremental tinkering/handling upgrades, getting a low km 4th gen would be the way to go.

Though take my opinion with a grain of salt as my experience on modding/doing mechanical work myself is zilch!

sound about right, its in the budget and I will be doing a few mods but nothing too big.

Can tell from the vin plate but the quickest, easiest way is by the headlight design.

Worth a double check on the vin plate if you actually find one you're interested in.

And you've probably already browsed these two garage threads, but good CS examples of BH and a BP.

And I actually bought a 3.0 BP today, so the wagon mafia has a new member:)  Had been torn on what to buy for a while and eventually came to the conclusion that since I can't do the work myself, I was better off buying a newer car that needed less work than an older car where by the time I had paid someone else to fix it up I was spending roughly the same money.

Though time is scarce for me as we just had a baby, if I had the time to learn to do more work myself my decision might have been different!

Nice, what are the 3.0's like? I almost had one of them as my car now but never worked out, sadly I didn't have my full license and wasn't allowed to test drive it. I suppose they would be much different than turbo ones aye?

I will take a look at those posts :)

Haven't had a chance to drive it much yet as it is massively overdue for a service (recently clicked over 100k so all the fluids/filters need to be done) and it needs new tyres and a wheel alignment as the previous owner has been driving it for a year with wheels badly out of alignment so tyres have really uneven wear.

Best description, relative to the BH and BP 2.0 NA wagons we already have, is "smooth". Just kind of sneaks up to 100km/h without even realising it or feeling like you are going fast.

Once it receives some love I will have a bit more fun with it...

  • 2 weeks later...

My last two cars were Legacy sedans. A '99 B4 RSK and then a 2003 2.0 GT. The GT was a lovely car - very capable, comfortable, spacious and reliable. Obviously not in the same league performance wise as an STi, but still a very quick car when you wanted it to be and very easy to launch off the line if you felt inclined to do so (I had a manual). The only thing I didn't like was the lack of folding rear seats.

I have very fond memories of the GT - it is a very underrated performance family sedan.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
