'94 WRX - buyers guide?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Havent owned a Sub for a while. JT looking to move on one of my bikes and get something more family friendly/practical as a fun weekend only car/collectible investment to hold onto.

What do you lads think of this?

https://www.trademe.co.nz/1176886432

Price wise? Are good original examples holding or increasing in value?

What's to look out for with these first gen WRX's?

Havent driven it yet (will do) but it looks pretty clean and honest from the outside.

Cheers for you help guys.

Although very tidy (at least from the photos), that seems like a pretty steep asking price for a V1 with 190xxx on the clock. Well into sti money there, although condition would be somewhat worse. I couldn't really tell you what they're doing in regards to maintaining their pricing, you do seem to see a few tidy examples of the classic V1 & V2 that are up and over the asking price of this one, but it does beg to question whether they sell at these prices. I think you may find the answer is no.

Still looks very tidy though and you would hope at this price that has been superbly maintained.

Price seems steep, could be a really tight car but could be just as bad as a cheap v1 at 190,000kms, is it just me or are people trying more and more to make 190,000kms sound like low kms for an old car ? Lol :P

looks good though but as that guy said - could get the sti version for bit more if not the same price

first gen wrxs will be getting alot more valuable in the coming years for sure, I imagine a standard v1 sti would make for a great earner if you kept it for 5ish years

I think the price seems a bit steep is because it's selling through a dealer.

Does look in good condition and at least you know it hasn't been molested by someone. Not sure if I could bring myself to pay that much for a 94.

But from what I've seen for sale lately 190xxx ks does seem on the lower side.

I would consider it if you wanted to keep it original, but if you want to modify it I would look for something else.

You'd be dreaming if you bought that with the intention of it appreciating in value

If you started with a $1500 "pre loved" example and refurbed it, then sure you'd make some money - good paint and some new alloys can do wonders for the first impression of a car

Subarus as a rule are not a make which generally appreciates in value unless you have one of the real rockinghorseshit models - rs/ra, 22b, type r coupe, S20X models etc

I don't think an "ordinary" WRX is ever going to become collectible, they just might bottom out in value a little higher than some other cars.

If I was spending $8k I would get something a whole lot newer with less KMs and an STI badge on it.

Cheers all - yes agreed wouldn't be buying at the asking price, would want a good bit off it. Not looking to modify one

190km's low? Maybe not, but if you consider 8k km's/year over 23 years isn't too bad. I see a lot of beaten up cars on Trademe with well over 200kms on the clock and they seem to be a hybrid of parts - finding a nice clean stocker doesn't seem easy.

There is another '94 down here at 100kms asking $8k which I've just seen advertised. Probably a safer deal..

An early STI would be lovely but find me or put me onto someone with a good one under $10k is the challenge 😬

I wouldn't pay more than half that

Look past the nice wheels and it's just another 200km old early wrx, one of thousands. Yes that's about 8k per year but no matter how you dress it up it's getting long in the tooth

For the same money - literally - you can have one ten years and two generations newer and less kms

We'll be out of fossil fuels before that thing starts to be worth the asking price. If you like the early shape maybe look st a v5/6, the facelift holds value and is worth the cost and still keeps the classic lines. If you look outside trademe and car dealers you'll see a much bigger range available - most dealers don't bother with cars this age or type anymore as they're just a time bomb in their eyes, and fair enough too

I would be looking for  version 4 sti 1998..

Right in the middle of the classic era..

Still has the early look but with the face lift interior and to my eye the finest of its time..

Get a Type R coupe or RA 4 door if you can find one in your price range..

I hate to say it but the facebook marketplace and various buy sell pages on there are your best bet

Buyer beware as always but it's no worse than trademe or the old buy/sell/exchange paper

Looking at mine now there's half a dozen wrx's within a couple hundred km of me for under 3k, ranging from neglected bogan POS's to bone stock

People are getting turned off the trademe "$140-to-sell-a-$1500-car" model these days, they want it sold now and they dont want to wait 2 weeks for an auction to end

if you want something that will hold value get a bc5 :P they are already going up in price, although finding an original one in good order is nearly impossible.

As the others have said, that 94 wrx is worthless. STI RA is probably the only gc8 which seems to hold it's value.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey cheers for your replies guys. Just an update, drive the car included in my first post - yeah a nice original vehicle, some TLC needed but no, wouldn't be paying the asking price.

On that note, taken your points on board, what are your thoughts here:

Lets say it's as tidy as it sounds for arguements sake, and the price was negotiated down a bit?

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
