Who is doing what to keep their engine bay cool?

Berg

Recommended Posts

Since I'm looking to keep my IC top mount, was wondering what members have done to reduce heat in the engine bay (not talking about temp of air into engine but rather keeping the 'bay "cool")

What you found good bang for buck, personal experience etc.

(I have googled and have my own thoughts but socialising this kind of stuff is usually intetesting.)

Ive now got my Aircon directed into the engine bay and keep it blasting on cold!

Not really, I don't actually have anything to keep the engine bay cool.

Not sure if it will work on Subs but on my mondeo on way was to remove the rubber seal at the back of the engine bay on the plastic bit at the front of the windscreen so it allows excess hot air about while driving (V6 mondeos are bad for not having any room in the engine bay and building up a lot of heat)

Put the plastic under tray in.

I always thought it was the opposite- I was told to remove it from the mondeo to help with extra cool air under the car!

Every day is a learning day.

Do you know how much difference in temp there is, I take theres not a lot you can do while the car is stationary

A lot

Ive done measuring of TMIC temps with and without the under try and it's a startling difference in how quick it cools from being heat soaked

Speaking of which - best thing for keeping intake temps down is to lose that top mount you want to keep. The "lag" from a front mount is a load of bollocks and the temp differences are huge in the real world

I have run fans under a top mount cooler which does work quite well too, in actual measured terms not guesswork terms

The rubber seal at the back of the engine bay is a high pressure area at speed, it pushes air in if you remove it and makes it harder to push air through the bonnet scoop. Leave it in place unless you just want more noise

Yeah, the consensus is to go FMIC, but was looking to try keep the stock TMIC a while longer and perform best practice with what I've got. Then when I eventually join the FMIC "cool" club I'll have the rest of the heat sources already mitigated or minimised.

I can't tell if you're making a great dad pun with "cool" club or not

You can make them invisible if you want to keep a stock looking car, but no matter how you dress it up anything you do to improve top mount efficiency is pissing in the wind compared to just putting the cooler in a proper position

I know it's a bit crass but my point stands - you can faff about with all the ducting and heat tape and oversized scoops you want but it's ultimately still going to cook itself as soon as the car is stationary for more than a few seconds, and with what a front mount kit costs these days it's a hard to argue proposition.

Ive got a couple of small slimline fans in the garage if you want them, I fitted them to the underside of a v7 sti cooler on a gtb and whilst it was semi effective, it still paled in comparison to a cheap trademe front mount

As well as that, it's worth going to the effort of straightening out of straightening out your top mount fins - it blows me away how many cars have them all flattened down, it renders the cooler near useless when air can't go through it. Ditto for upgrading to silicone / sti joiner pipes, the old corrugated plastic ones aren't too great.

Oh oh also the old line about moving a pod filter into the guard if you have one, give things a head start not a handicap

Okay, you got me. It was a dad joke ^_^

(I've also recently ordered a "because, familycar" sticker in gold)

Okay, so I heard +1 for steel pipes, coated and wrapped.

Did you know there is a product you can apply internally to the pipe as well as the usual external coating? Double protection from radiated heat with an external coating. Sounds like it might mess with the rate of air in the pipe though so I'd not like to be the guinea pig for that one.

Haha, eyeball coating

@Marky What would a decent FMIC kit cost these days? After reading this, im tempted.

Also where would you pick one up from?

Anywhere from $800 or so upwards for one that isn't a pile of S*** that will make your car worse.

Also be very aware of any cutting required, and many of them won't let you keep your foglights if your car has them.

You can now do some minor cutting of cars this age but I suspect they still need a cert for it.

I found a drop in coolant temp by going round the edges of the radiator and sealing them to the chassis, so that air can't flow around the radiator. I was having issues at idle on start lines in my rally car with the coolant temp getting too high in summer. This fixed this. Otherwise, as EVERYONE has said, FMIC will significantly drop IAT, it is worth it. And as you can see from my profile pic, not like the FMIC is that noticable...

I'm disagreeing

Even a stock evo (or similar) intercooler and a an ebay piping kit will be a massive improvement over the stock subaru offering

I agree for anything pre 2000 is pretty much garbage for any above average power levels. The v7 sti cooler is pretty decent, seen it hold 240kw pretty nicely. Shrouds and airflow are key.

Below 200kw the stock coolers perform within a safe range, the front mount will work significantly better in all the tests I've seen documented. RDL reckoned about 200rpm difference between a front mount and top mount both on tuned ecu when they tested it.

It's not a small increase in peak power

It's a massive difference in knock prevention and power loss

People say "Only gain 15hp peak with fmic"

What they fail to mention is "Oh but there's also 50hp loss at times with TMIC"

Re the shroud - all subarus HAVE a shroud from scoop to intercooler already. If it doesn't then it's been removed and the intercooler is near useless at the moment anyway

Great point! It's the flat, reliable power curve enabler.

I already knew FMIC was clearly superior, but wasn't aware of just by how much.

Also, seems like the hot side of the engine is the only part good for wrapping.

That and air flow is king in cooling. Hence perhaps also an uncluttered engine bay. Heat shield good too then?

And when @Munkvy was saying radiator I was thinking IC. :| That's a good, separate piece altogether?! If a turbo is oil and water cooled, then a radiator would take care of the water cooled aspect, right?

Learnt a bit more here so far than I did lurking in Naisoc and Ozfoz.

Yes, I was referring to radiator. Which will help keep everything cooler in the engine bay if it's sealed off properly. I have only ever used FMIC really, and always wrap the intercooler piping. IAT is typically under 40 degrees even in summer when racing.

Dyno sheets are flawed. How often in real life situations do you do pulls from 2.5-7k? Generally you ream thro a few gears if youre having a moment of madness which means you wont notice any difference.

A good fmic is key and Ive always had IAT lower than 30deg with unwrapped unshielded whatever piping just a basic front mount.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
