Advice needed for transmission concerns

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

Firstly apologies if I am posting in the wrong part of this forum and if this is a re-occuring issue, feel free to point me in the right direction if so.

I'll try keep this post short. So I own a Subaru Impreza 2008 1.5L N/A, done 60,000kms and auto transmission. I've just started getting the orange transmission light come on when I've been driving for approx 30mins. It will usually go away after I've left the car to cool down over night. Not really sure what it means regarding my transmission. I've checked the transmission oil colour and it doesn't seem to be dirty and has a pink tinge to it. One thing I have noticed though is that the oil level is way above the High mark on the dipstick, I'm also using the "warm" measurement of the dip stick. So can anyone please give me some advice as to how I should approach this issue? I prefer to do all the work on my car myself to save money. Cheers yo!

That's the check engine light I think? So not necessarily anything to do with transmission. Get someone to read your ECU error codes or buy a cheap VAG-COM cable and do it yourself.

Oh true? Whoops! Ok I'll try figure out a way to get the ECU error codes read. You wouldn't happen to have any recommendations in Auckland by any chance?

Thanks for your help!

Yep agreed with @willisnz , first thing to do is read the ECU error codes.

Regarding your transmission oil level, this one is a little tricky to read. With an AT you have to cycle through all positions (P, D, N, R) and keep the engine running before reading the level. If you don't do it that way the level you read doesn't mean anything.

Any decent mechanic should have a code reader. Subaru specialists in AKL that ppl on here use are Subtech, Highbrook Automotive and club favorite and all around GC @Subirex Automotive.

Otherwise, buy something like this from TradeMe and install FreeSSM (drivers are sometimes a pain in the ass for recent versions of Windows). Or pop into a supercheap auto and they will charge you $14-$28 to read your codes (http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/services/in-store/diagnostics).

Thanks Delta! Would you recommend I get a professional to help with the ECU codes? That's interesting regarding the transmission oil level, makes complete sense though. Is there any gear which is should be in while I check the dip stick? Cheers

Awesome mate! Thanks for that, I feel like it's probably easier in the long run to take it to a pro, so I'll try contact one of those places you recommended. Cheers

You can buy a device like the one listed by willisnz and read the error codes by yourself. Then look them up on ClubSub/Google and decide what you do from there. Personally, I find it really handy to have a device to read error codes and it will probably be useful again in the future.

Just check the level while in P with the engine running.

Cycle through the gears then level in neutral and then check. there will be 2 markings on the dip stick usually one will say cold and the other hot.

I've always been advised to check when the trans is hot and running. Usually when I get home from work.

The colour of the oil on the paper towel looks good though, so I wouldn't worry about that

Good point! I don't have a PC computer, so I know I'm going to have issues with software drivers and what not, but I like the idea of taking the code to supercheap auto to be read. Man this forum is full of geniuses lol!

Ive got a Wifi reader I brought for my outback, but it doesn't really work as I wanted (due to the model year I believe).

It should work on yours though, if you are keen then I'm happy to sell it to you, with this and Torque pro then you can monitor lots of stuff and have it on a phone or tablet.

I paid $100 , you can have it for $40

its similar to this:

Hey Ajay, thanks for the message. Would you have anytime available tomorrow to scan my car? I was planning to visit Supercheap tomorrow morning, but I'd definitely rather save the money and get it checked out by you. Cheers!

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
