Split CV Boot: Advice please!

Recommended Posts

Just looking under the bonnet prepping for a timing belt change, and saw a lot of dark grease on the drivers side... :(

So boot is split, must have only been like that for a few days so have caught it early and no noise yet.

So best option? Dealer say $70 for the boot kit, Repco says have axles for $240-260

Think just changing the boot will be ok, but looking for advice on what would be the normal 'go to' fox for you guys?

This guy makes it look easy, I don't have an impact though, so is standing on the brakes enough to undo the hub nut using a large breaker bar?

This guy makes it look even easier!

Bit of debate on if taking the ball joint out is easy or not, my car isn't rusty, so think it should be ok, that or move the whole strut around.

Cheers! All this right before the holidays too...

Repco won't sell you axles, just CV kits as far as I know. $70 is a S*** tonne of money for a rubber boot,

grease and a couple of cable ties.

If I have a ripped boot, I generally remove the whole axle, remove both CVs, clean completely, inspect and repack

with grease and new boots. You only need to replace the CV if it's worn.

The axle nut on the hub can be anywhere from hard to get off to impossible... the last one I did

had to be cut off with a hammer and chisel. Most of the time they will come off with a large

breaker bar... a long extension pipe might be needed. The hand brake should hold the car still.

If the inner CV boot or CV is the one that needs replacing, you could just change it while on the car... won't be

that hard.

Got it from the dealer for $60 in the end, don't think that is too much more that Repco/Supercheap factoring in it is a genuine part with all the extra clips and circlip required etc. Need to get going with BNT and the likes of those guys, but considering  I picked it up from Subaru Saturday morning and it is already fitted by myself (working around this weather!) I'm happy to have gotten it fixed quick.

Didn't want to keep driving on it and risk longer term damage being done.

And yeah, was just the inner so followed the vid, and no need to mess with axle nuts etc.

Everything genuine in NZ is super expensive...just a single axle nut is $25!

I thought the $70 was the repco price though... which would be ridiculous.

Well done getting it fixed.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
