Water to air intercoolers

Yea, they have some serious heat soak problems though. I came bloody close to going that route myself. Would love to see someone in NZ do one on a big power Subaru.

A few Aussie Liberty guys have gone that route. Makes even more sense on big power Legacy’s/Liberty’s since the space for an intercooler is even smaller than the later STI’s.

One guy had a heavily customised setup on an engine pushing 330wkw. Still running it on his new 2.7 stroker but haven't seen the latest dyno plot.

The standard pumps arent reliable enough so most like to upgrade to the cobra option.

That was with cobra pump not the nasty plastic thing.

Only thing that that I don’t like is that if they leak into the intake it’s pretty much a horror story for the motor.

I cant see how they can heat soak. Water is something like 25x more efficient at conducting heat. As long as you don’t over speed the water flow it should draw heat extremely well, plus since the cooler is out front and you’d have to heat all the water before it loses efficiency

Solely because the specific heat capacity of water is so high. While it has the ability to pull a crap tonne more energy out of the charge air it also takes a crap tonne more air to pull that energy back out of the water which the radiator fans won't do very well when stationary.

Once they do get hot it is super hard to cool them back down unless doing consistent high speed or the ambient temps are very low.

On the track they’ll be ok but stuff like autox they'll be absolutely rubbish.

Getting the ice box and using that between runs may help that issue though.

That is kind of true but the area differences between the exchanger and radiator offset that quite a bit.

I cant find much that says they heat soak from people who actually have them. Other than drag racing but they are icebox only.

It's a tidy way for OEM manufacturers to run setups that fits the power and cooling envelope they require and they have the ability to change anything else they require to ensure it all works as it should.

Especially with twin turbo V8 setups that'd otherwise clutter the engine bays even further.

I'd only be comparing to other aftermarket examples to justify this route to be honest.

There’s a bit of a discussion from a few years back on legacygt.com

That guy is the one who develops/sells all the auto trans mechanical improvements to handle decent power and other various Legacy based out of the box projects so does know his S***.

His cliff notes on the last page sum up why he decided against going any further or developing anything. Would have been nice if he had actually gone through with it for some solid data from someone who knows how to interpret it rather than just ramble on on the internet.

If you're serious on doing it then go ahead and collect all the data you can so the rest of us can be better informed in the future.

The other issue is running a front mount is becoming increasingly hard as you have bigger and bigger crash bars which can’t be cut.

Australia has almost no rules and virtually no wof or cert unless you car gets ordered there.

There’s always a way to make one fit legally. Just have to think outside the box with fitment. Ever considered a 5th injector maybe even before the manifold to add some chemical cooling? Dunno how a stock ECU would control it though. @Niran still has his meth setup he isn't using last time I heard.

Aussie is worse than us for compliance with stuff like this... Or is it just certain states? I know some of them struggle to the max with getting things legal and wish it was as clearcut as ours is...

Yea he pays the big bucks to have things looking perfect. The engine bay looks almost stock at a glance.

His tuner/builder has done an epic job making that kind of power in stock location too.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
